Fern Gloria Wilkins (nee Bergquist) age 89 years of Shaunavon died on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 following an eight year stay at Shaunavon Hospital & Care Centre. Fern was born on the family farm north of Shaunavon on February 26, 1931. She received her schooling at Thompson Valley and Shaunavon High Schools. Fern worked at the Royal Bank and as a telephone operator for Sasktel until she and Ken were married in 1949. They lived on the homestead for a year and then moved to farm one mile south of Shaunavon. They started their dairy with six cows and a milk pail and increased to 40 – 50 cows with all pipeline milkers. Grain farming was their next project as they expanded their farming with more farmland as the years went by. Fern played an active role in the community, hosting 4-H Club, filling the roles of 4-H leader, secretary of the United Church Women and secretary of the Silver Blades Figure Skating Club. Her greatest contribution was within her family, hauling harvest suppers to the field, taxiing children to clubs, sports events and camps, sewing fine clothes and quilts, gardening, knitting, crocheting and crafting. She enjoyed attending and hosting Wednesday afternoon coffee parties for over 50 years. She and Ken were avid Bridge players. They spent ten years at their winter home in Arizona. She was predeceased by her husband Ken on November 1, 2012, her parents Lars and Anna Bergquist, son-in-law Murray Haakenson, grandson Roland Wilkins, her brother Harvey Bergquist and sister-in-law Clara and her sister June Ross and brother-in-law Neil. She is survived by her children: Sandra, partner Armand; Sandra’s daughter Angie, husband Allan and her girls, Shaye and Tyler; Brian, wife Robyn and their three daughters, Pam (husband TJ and their son Keiran), Joanne (husband Sean) and Katie (husband Markus); Heather, and former husband Rick and their three children, Noah (wife Crystal and their daughter Reese), Hayley (husband Russell and their children Veronica, Andrew, Julie and Daniel), and Melanie (husband Aaron); Carolyn, husband Brett and her children, Wade (wife Angie and their girls, Olivia and Layla) and Jillian (husband Ryan), Wade and Jillian’s father, Peter Illerbrun; Brent, wife Anne and their five children, Breanne (husband Tyson and their children Jayne, Clayton and Connor), Damon (wife Kelsie and their children Scarlett, Jack and Elliot), Karl (wife Jaime), Dean, and Renée (husband Tyler); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A private family graveside service was held at Hillcrest Cemetery at Shaunavon with Funeral Celebrant Bernadette Schneider officiating.
