Phyllis Joanne CHERRY Obituary

It is with sadness that the family announce the passing of their mother Phyllis Cherry on Friday, September 2020 at WCGH.

She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Maisie Harris; brothers, Stuart and Don; and sisters, Barbara and Eileen – all of Ontario, Canada; also her first husband, Brian McClary (September 2004) and her second husband, Ernest Cherry (July 2018).  She is survived by her loving children, Michael (Sandy) of Victoria, Eileen of Kelowna, Alison (Rick) of Whitecourt, AB and Paul (Rose) of Port Alberni; grandchildren, Cody (Deserray) of Port Alberni, Jessica (Gary) of New Zealand and Cole of Kelowna, her first great grand daughter, Lexie (New Zealand) and her soon to be born 2nd great grandchild.

Phyllis was born June 4, 1938 and grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.  She met Brian McClary (the love of her life) and they married September 1, 1956.  All of the children were born in the “Soo”.  Brian wanted adventure, so the family moved West to Squamish, then to Powell River and finally to Port Alberni.

As the children grew up, Phyllis was able to do other things.  She worked at the Credit Union, Pearson’s Legal Firm, and then lastly Stofer Smith Legal Firm.  Phyllis loved to bowl (10 pin), she also enjoyed curling, gardening, walking and playing cards.  She was a great cook, always willing to try new recipes.  She was a member of the Legion, Branch 293.

After Brian passed away, Phyllis found new friends – she played cards at the Alano Club and at the Legion and the Lawn Bowling Club and was a member of the Saturday Walking Group.  One of those friends was Ernie Cherry, later he became her husband.  They loved to travel south, often with Ernie’s sister Joan.  As Ernie loved to garden, Phyllis was canning up a storm.

She was excited at becoming a great grandmother and looking forward to the birth of her second great grand child.

Even though the children were not living in Port Alberni, they all kept in touch and visited often.  Phyllis loved them very much and they loved her in return.

She will be missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations in Phyllis’ memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
