Nestor Halerewich Obituary

Nestor Halerewich of Edson, Alberta passed away peacefully on September 13/2020 in the Mayerthorpe Extendicare facility at the age of 80.  He was born to John and Emily Halerewich on November 5, 1939 in Garland, Manitoba.

Nestor was the oldest sibling of four boys and seven girls, and they moved from Garland in 1948 to a homestead west of Grimshaw, Alberta.  They established a large farm and Nestor learned much about farming and ranching during his time growing up.  It was in Brownvale in November 1963 where Nestor married Clara Evans and Rodney, Valerie, and Tina soon joined them, but ultimately this marriage ended in divorce some years later. Nestor worked on the oil rigs for a time eventually ending up in Edson. He met Linda and became a part of her and her children’s lives between 1978-1985 while operating a small trucking company and a small farm in the Rosevear area.

In 1985, Nestor was helping out over at Golding’s ranch with various odd jobs and it was here that he met Gwen.  She was recently single and Nestor thought she could use some company and the rest is history.  They were married July 11, 1986 in Edson and moved back to his dad’s farm the following year to help his dad with the work.  They lived and worked at the farm until an opportunity arose to establish a homestead of their own, which they did, but at this stage in their lives just wasn’t viable.  They rented a home in Berwyn and Gwen worked in the seniors lodge there for a time as well as in Peace River for a mom and daughter that required homecare.  They also moved to northern BC for a short time to manage a ranch as well as another near Weberville.  They decided to retire and came back to Edson in 2001.

Nestor was always a farmer with a tender heart for his livestock so when they moved back to Edson they were invited to move back out to Golding’s ranch and he was able to fulfill his desire for having critters.  They had all kinds of shelters and sheds and nursery pens on their little piece of land to carry on with his animal husbandry skills.  If any animals needed doctoring, Nestor was willing to help out.

He was able to live out his remaining years, mostly at the little farm, with Gwen until she became sick in October of last year and was hospitalized until passing in January, 2020.  Nestor had been battling various health challenges as well and had to leave home the same time as Gwen, ultimately ending up in Mayerthorpe in March of this year.

In following their wishes for a combined Celebration of Life, a service is planned for 2pm October 3, 2020 at Bethel Pentecostal Church, 6350 13 Ave, Edson, Alberta with Pastors John Greiner and George Stone officiating.  Due to covid there is a maximum attendance of 100 with livestreaming available via Bethel’s Facebook page.  We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the awesome care our folks received from Dr. Smith, Marilyn Oishi, Kelly Grant and all the nursing, healthcare, and support staff in both Edson and Mayerthorpe. We would also like to thank those that gave of their time and visited them while they were in hospital, your kindness does not go unnoticed. In lieu of flowers please donate to an animal rescue/shelter as they both loved their fur babies.
