Kathleen “Kate” Summerhays, 89, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, May 23, at Unity Point Allen Hospital. She was born September 20, 1927, in Villa Grove, Ill, the daughter of Harold and Esther Mense Pierce. She married Thomas Summerhays on June 14, 1949 in Waterloo and they later divorced. Kate owned and operated the Boardroom in Waterloo for many years. Survivors include: five sons, Walt (Chris) of Waterloo, Mike of Waterloo, Paul of Evansdale, Jim of Waterloo, and Steve (Danette) of Waterloo; five grandchildren; a brother, Walter (Esther) Pierce of Los Angeles, Calif; a sister, Eleanor (Conrad) Wessels of Tulsa, Okla. Preceded in death by: her daughter, Julie Summerhays, a grandson, Tommy Summerhays, three brothers, Harold Pierce, Kenneth Pierce, and Thomas Pierce; a sister, Barbara Fulcher. Services: 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, at St. Edward Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 25, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary.
