William Allan Sharp

     William Allan Sharp passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, September 26th at the Lion’s Prairie Manor at the age of 89.

     He will lovingly be remembered by his wife, Verna and his children Faron (Robin), Janet (Harry), Karen (Ross), Beverly (Brendan), Dianna (Rick), 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.  He will also be missed by his sister Joan, brother & sister-in-law Raymond and Gail and sister-in-law Heather. 

     Bill was predeceased by his parents, Bill & Isabel; brothers Norman, Alex & Ken, sister Shirley and 4 grandchildren, Stephanie, Geofrey, Kelly and Jeff.

     Bill grew up in the Southridge District and moved to the Gainsborough District with his family in 1953. He worked at various jobs — bush camps in Ontario, on the railway washing dishes, as a construction labourer at the Portage General Hospital as it was being built, and Chuckry’s Potato Farm before beginning his career at Connery’s Riverdale Farms.  Bill started out as a field hand/equipment operator and then became a semi truck driver, hauling the veggies to Peak of the Market in Winnipeg, sometimes up to four trips a day.  He also made several trips out West and to the States to pick up various pieces of equipment for work, taking Mom along for a ride.  Dad worked at Connery’s for over 30 years until his retirement at the age of 64.  While working fulltime he was also a small farmer, with cattle being his main interest.  He always said, “Eat Beef Keep the Prices Up”.

     Dad married Mom in 1956 and they lived in the boys 12’ x 16’ bunkhouse for nearly 4 years and after three children, they built their house and added two more to the family.  Dad enjoyed visiting with friends and family from near and afar, as they always either called or dropped by for a visit while in Manitoba.

     In 2017 as Dad’s health began to deteriorate he agreed to sell their farm to the only people he trusted to take care of his land as it should be, Mayfair Farms.  Dad spent a couple of months in the Portage Hospital before being moved to Notre Dame Hospital for 10 months.  He thoroughly enjoyed visiting with the nurses and paramedics while there.  Giving all he met, new nicknames.  He always looked forward to visits from paramedic, Flatfoot.  He then moved into the Lion’s Prairie Manor in Aug 2019 and was able to enjoy many more visits from family and friends, until COVID became our reality.

Due to COVID precautions and regulations, a private family service will be held on Saturday, October 3rd.
