Obituary
Betty Lou Kellam, “Sister Betty”, as she was affectionately known, was born April 30, 1962, in Milford, Delaware. Betty departed this life in Onancock, Virginia, on September 27, 2020. She was 58 years old. Sister Betty had many skills and interests. In school, she was a member of the school’s pep band and was a good softball player. Not only did she play Laurel Little League softball as a youth, she continued playing into adulthood. Betty worked at Mountaire Farms of Delaware, as well as McDonald’s and Wendy’s in Seaford. She also was an entrepreneur, faithfully baking and selling her delectable treats at various locations, including her primary location, Family Dollar. One thing that you could count on was her perfectionism. She made sure her treats were baked with love and presented so flawlessly that one could not resist indulging. Sister Betty was no stranger when it came to meeting and talking to people; after all, she was the family's social butterfly. She was NEVER reluctant in sharing her testimony of how God made her a believer in Him. All that came across her path, including her customers, even if only once, can attest that along with a good treat, they received the word of God Sister Betty LOVED the Lord! She ushered in church, something in which she took particular pride. She believed that after all she had been through in her life, ushering was her way of leading people to God. It was only fitting, that her wide and welcoming smiling face, was the first everyone saw as they came to the House of God. Sister Betty loved making a joyful noise unto the Lord. Her children fondly remember her singing church songs and remixing them, including her own words from time to time. She also liked playing the guitar and harmonica in church, no matter who said what! Betty’s sense of humor will be truly and deeply missed. She had a photographic memory for details and could tell a story like no one else, complete with voice inflections and facial expressions. She ALWAYS was good for a good laugh. Her favorite scriptures were Psalm 84:10: “For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand; I, would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.” – This was related to her love of ushering in the church; and Psalm 121:1-2 “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” If Sister Betty could give a lasting word of advice, she would say, "Get to know Jesus for yourself." Betty’s mother, Marie D. Kellam, preceded her in death, along with four siblings, Cherie Bolden, Sylvia Kellam, Rosalee Johnson and Chauncey Kellam. Sister Betty leaves to praise her life, a sister, Florence Stanley, and her husband Carl, of Laurel, DE and a sister-in-law Sandra Kellam of Milford, DE. Most importantly, Sister Betty leaves the world her legacy, her children, Dion L. Kellam of Laurel, DE, Courtney A. Kellam of Laurel, DE, Tashiba R. Kellam of New Church, VA, Jose R. Negron of Nassawadox, VA, Brittney K. Turner and her husband Harry, of Georgetown, DE, Sunday M. Kellam of Mappsville, VA; and Angel N. Turner, Sa’Nih Kellam (of whom she was guardian until she fell ill), Zayne Bivens, Amiyah Williams and Jaxon Mapp and two great-grandchildren, Cali and Israel Drummond. Sister Betty also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. The lives of everyone who knew her were blessed and enriched by the friendship and joy she brought.
