Verna Johnson Bucyrus, Ohio Obituary

Verna Johnson

Verna Johnson, 89, joined her husband Wallace in Heaven on May 22, 2017 following her death at Altercare of Bucyrus. He had waited for her since May 9, 2012 along with their infant daughter, Hazel who was stillborn August 16, 1950. Verna was born September 2, 1927 in Missouri Branch, West Virginia to the late Thomas David and Fannie Mae (Music) Crum. On May 16, 1946, she married the love of her life and Wallace’s job brought the family to Bucyrus in 1966. She was a loving homemaker and also worked at Heckert’s and Foodland as well as babysat for a couple of years. Known as the “Pie Lady,” Verna had a gift for baking and cooking. Her recipes were often copied but never perfected as Verna had a knack for creating the best tasting pies and cakes, with pumpkin and pineapple pies and prune cake being local favorites. When it came to meals, her chicken and dumplings, southern style biscuits, and 14-day pickles were second to none. Verna lived for the Lord and was active at the Bucyrus Freewill Baptist Church. She was a “prayer warrior” who wasn’t shy about praying aloud and in public for those in need. Known as “Moe” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Verna loved spending time with family. Whether coloring, playing silly games, or just singing to them, she cherished every moment. When not in the kitchen or spending time with her loved ones, she could often be found working in her rather large vegetable garden, which she proudly worked for 16 years and always shared her produce with others, or reading Love Inspired books. Verna always placed the needs of others ahead of her own. She loved to laugh and could be ornery if the moment was right. She is survived by two daughters, Pauline Dennis and Rachel Wion, both of Bucyrus; seven grandchildren and their families, Traci (Charles) Spicer, Johnathon (April Osborn) Wion; Nicholas (Laurel) Wion, Gregory (April) Chance, Wayne (Estrella) Dennis, Sr., Mark Dennis, and Gregg (Shannon) Dennis. She is also survived by three siblings, Fred Crum, Phyllis (George) Coburn, and Ellen (Earl) Hinkle as well as many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Verna was preceded in death by 16 siblings and two sons-in-law, George W. Wion and Cecil W. Dennis. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 26 at Wise Funeral Service where her funeral will be held at 12 Noon Saturday. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Bucyrus Freewill Baptist Church, HomeCare Matters Hospice, National Autism Association, or National Stroke Association through the funeral home.
