Charlotte Smith-Carter Obituary

Charlotte (Smith) Carter, 88, longtime St. Paul resident, died at 1:05 p.m., Monday, May 22, 2017 at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg. She was born July 6, 1928 in St. Paul, a daughter of Louis J. and Elizabeth H. (Schoenhofer) Smith. She attended schools in St. Paul and St. Mary’s College in Atchison. Charlotte married James E. “Jim” Carter on September 3, 1947 in St. Paul. Jim preceded her in death on December 27, 2010. Charlotte and Jim owned and operated three companies, Industrial Crating and Hardwood Products, both in St. Paul and Thayer Ranch and Farm in Thayer. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul and the St. Francis Altar Society. Charlotte enjoyed sewing, gardening, painting, crafts, ceramics, and cooking, Survivors are her sons, Jamie Carter, and his wife, Pam, of Joplin, Chris Carter, and his wife, Miriam, of St. Paul; her daughters, Pam Dent, of Pittsburg, Becky Smith, of Farlington, Margaret (Meg) Beezley, of Kansas City, Kansas, Lori Umbarger, of Girard; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; her brother, Robert J. Smith, of Tulsa; her sister, Constance Marie Payne, of Wichita. She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Carter, on September 7, 1982; her brother, L. J. Smith; her sisters, Betty Diskin and Carol LaForge. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 26, 2017 at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in St. Paul. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Thursday at St. Francis Church in St. Paul with visitation following. Friends may call after 11:00 Thursday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in St. Paul. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Altar Society and these may be left at the church or the Carson-Wall Funeral Home, P. O. Box 272, St. Paul, Kansas 66771.
