It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George W. Payne, 83, dear Father, grandfather, brother and friend, on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Point Aconi, he was the son of the late Philip and Martha Payne.

George had worked for many years in the construction industry before illness forced an early retirement.

Music was a big part of George’s life. He played accordion in several bands over the years and was a familiar guest musician at the former Orange Lodge and the North Sydney Fire Hall.

He was an animal lover, especially his cats (fur Babies) Mork, Mindy and Thumpy and was a proud grandfather to his six grandchildren.

George is survived by his seven children, Philip (Darlene) Payne, Darren Payne, Tena Payne, Randy (Sheila) Payne, Angie Payne, Blayer (Andrea) Payne and Jamie Young. By his six grandchildren, Jarod, Logan, Brandon, David, Monica, Elliott; by his three brothers, Alden, John and James “Sprick” and his sister Phyllis.

He was predeceased by his wife the former Dolena (MacKeigan) Payne; three sisters, Sarah, Stella and Frances.

There will be no visitation by request. A graveside service for family and friends will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2020, at Brookside Cemetery in Sydney Mines, with Rev. Marion Barclay-MacKay officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the NS Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney.
