Eugene Szydlowski Obituary

Eugene “Gene” Szydlowski, 87, of Alpena passed away Thursday, September 24, 2020 surrounded by family and friends at the home he and his wife Margaret built and raised their 10 children.

Eugene was born on October 5, 1932 in Alpena to the late Joseph and Victoria (Przybyla) Szydlowski.  On September 3, 1956, he married Margaret Howard.  Eugene served in the United States Army, and upon discharge he sailed on the Great Lakes prior to joining Abitibi Corporation. Gene enrolled in accounting courses as he worked, and in a short time thereafter he earned the position as the company’s Cost Accountant, from which he retired after 39 years in 1997.  Gene developed many friendships in the community, and he was a member of All Saints Parish.  He enjoyed playing Pinochle, his trips to the casino, and Euchre with family. One of the greatest accomplishments as recognized by his 10 children and their families was how he supported them in the many activities in which he and mom were their greatest cheerleaders. Gene also enjoyed Tigers baseball and the pastime and enjoyment baseball provided him.  Dad’s tribute to God and family were always a priority.  When Dad and Mom began raising their family, they easily filled a pew at St. Bernard’s Church.  Dad and mom celebrated a resilient faithful marriage of 64 years on September 3rd. Dad’s faith in God is evident when the family comes together, easily filling the Church.   Gene loved his faith, and his family.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret; ten children, David (Rose) Szydlowski of Alpena, Mary (Dale) Dumas of Royal Oak, Michael (Cindy) Szydlowski of Alpena, Ann Szydlowski of Frazier, Susan (James) Grulke of Alpena, Thomas (Kim) Szydlowski of Woodhaven, Paul Szydlowski of Oxford, Catherine Szydlowski of St. Clair Shores, Matthew (Tammy) Szydlowski of Grand Ledge, Sarah (Jason) Hana of Shelby Township; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ryan & Holly (Jackson & Lillian), Adam & Kate, Jeremy & Kathleen (Liam), Jennifer & Brett (Nolan, Mason, Maggie), John & Emily (Faye), Dale & Krysta (Conrad), Eric & Brooke, Rebecca & Matt (Elijah & Landon), J.R. & Colleen (James, Daniel, Mila) Stephen, Benjamin, Owen, Madeline, Ethan, Rylie; and sister, Emily Sydlowski.
