Loraine Yvonne Porter, beloved partner of Fred Barg, passed away on September 22, 2020 at the age of 77 after a short battle with cancer. Loraine was born Oct 5, 1942 in Rosemary Alberta to Dr. Edward and Nora Porter. She grew up in Duchess Alberta with her older brother Gary and younger sister Charmaine. Loraine attended Duchess Mennonite Church as a youth, which instilled in her a life-long passion for God. Graduating from Duchess High School, she entered nursing school at the Royal Alexandra Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1964 as a Registered Nurse. Loraine moved to Powell River, BC where she began her nursing career and married Alan Richert, whom she remained married to until 1991. They had one son, David Richert. Loraine spent 47 years nursing at Powell River General Hospital, much of it in the ER and ICU. In addition to her love for nursing, she often spoke proudly of her involvement in Pioneer Girls, Ladies’ Bible Study, and leading music and choir at Westview Baptist Church on the piano. She loved playing softball, badminton and snow skiing, and hiking Cape Scott Trail was one of the highlights of her adventures. Loraine loved her backyard, loved Hawaii, and loved the farm in Alberta, but most of all she loved her family and friends. She was a wonderful friend and sister, and a dedicated mother and grandma who loved unconditionally. Her granddaughter Sara was the light of her life and they were “thick as thieves”. For the past 8 years Loraine was a loving and committed partner to Fred Barg, commuting between Powell River, BC and Brooks, Alberta frequently. The last 2 years she resided on the farm near Brooks, Alberta, returning to the place where she grew up. Here we say goodbye to mother, grandmother, partner and friend. Her legacy will live with us as we continue our journey. Fred Barg and family extend heartfelt thanks to Mel Snider and Dr. Gildenhuys form South Shore Medical Clinic, EMS personal, Brooks and Calgary ER staff, Peter Lougheed and Brooks Hospital staff. Funeral Services were held at Thom's Funeral Home on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 2:00 PM.
