Cleonis "Polly" Gregory Brown Obituary

Cleonis “Polly” Gregory Brown, 94, passed away at her home Sunday, May 21, 2017. She was married to William “Bill” Brown, who preceded her in death April 1, 2000. She was born on January 27, 1923 in Henry County, VA to the late Robert Taylor Gregory and Bertha Stone Gregory. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her brothers, Frank Stone Gregory and Harold Benjamin Gregory; sisters, Fairy Simmons Stokes, Frances Barnes, Geneva Parcell, and infant sister, Julia Gregory. She is survived by one daughter, Linda (Bill) Koger of Martinsville, VA; son, William Prentiss (Nikki) Brown of Aurora, OH; six grandchildren, Jeri Lynn Sscheel of Mableton, GA, Gregory Brown of Kent, OH, Kristy (Matt) Walker of Urbana, VA, Kerry (John)Wright of Richmond, VA, Kami (Brandon) Spencer of Martinsville, VA, and Yesika Aude of Kent, OH; and twelve great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Elsie (Connie) Campbell of Martinsville, VA. Polly was a charter member of Trinity Friends Church where she lovingly served her Lord in many capacities. She was a Sunday School teacher for many years for the Youth class. She was a member of the choir and served on many committees, one being an Elder for the church. Polly loved the Lord and put Him first in her life. She was a homemaker, loving her husband, children, and great-grandchildren. They called her Mimi or just “B”. Although her name was Cleonis, she was known all her life as “Polly”. She never seemed to know why, except she thought maybe Cleonis was too hard for her siblings to pronounce. She was a charter member of the Auxiliary of the Martinsville-Henry County Gideon Camp. She was president to the Auxiliary for many years and enjoyed the work of the Gideons in giving out God’s word, especially to the nurses. She and her husband attended many of the state and international conventions in various cities. She was also a member of the local Christian Women’s meetings, serving the Lord where needed. Polly will be missed by her family, her church, family, and many friends, but she is enjoying her new home in Heaven now with many family members and friends who have preceded her. The funeral will be Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel with Dr. Karl Luff and Rev. Timothy Satterfield officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service and other times at the residence. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 1243, Henry County East Camp, Martinsville, VA 24114 or to Trinity Friends Church, 5 Summit Street, Martinsville, VA 24112.
