Agnes Stenger Obituary

Agnes (Aggie) was born in Oakes, North Dakota to Michael and Anna (Geffery) Schuck on February 3rd, 1936. Agnes was 6 out of 5 brothers and 2 sisters. At a young age her father passed away, which left her mother as the sole provider.

Aggie’s family traveled to several states working for various farms. Aggie grew up working in the fields thinning and topping beets in Eastern MT, picking produce and hops in Yakima, WA, picking cotton in Arizona, all alongside her brothers and sisters. In the early 1950’s the family settled in Billings. Aggie and her mother become partners in the Billings Mattress Factory. During the day she worked with her mother and in the evening she was a waitress, where she met her husband Pete.

Pete and Aggie lived on the Southside of Billings where they raised Bill, Calvin, Jim and Zane. Aggie started a seamstress business, upholstered furniture, and ran a catering business, all from her home. Her real business was volunteering and raising her boys and many others, driving them from one sport activity to another. She always had a station wagon full of kids no matter where she went.

Aggie held a position as a member of Little Flower Church Alter Society for over 40 years. Only God knows how many funeral lunches she cooked, the number of after mass breakfasts she managed or how many cakes she baked for the church bazaar. She taught her boys how to set a proper table, have table manners and then clean off all the other tables in the church when done. Aggie volunteered for years at Guadalupe’s church fiesta. As she started to slow down, couple knee and hip surgeries, she became a greeter at church. She was on Taft School’s PTA Board for over 10 years. Yellowstone Little League secretary for 10 years. Aggie delivered Meals on Wheels every Wednesday and other days if needed for 43 years. Aggie was one of the people responsible for getting the little league baseball field built at South Park. As the boys got older and the sports changed Aggie, was right there volunteering to take on whatever needed to be done.

While the boys competed in youth rodeos, Aggie was a rodeo secretary, timer, president and secretary of different youth rodeo organizations. If someone needed a ride to a rodeo Aggie was the first to make sure they got there. She was also known to slip someone a little extra cash to help cover their entry fees if needed.

Raising four boys around rodeo - Pete and Aggie’s house was the place to stop. You never knew who you would find sleeping in the living room some mornings. Aggie would cook, wash cloths, patch clothes, sew horse blankets and break up fights. Those boys back then became men and world champions. Aggie was a timer for NRA and Old Timer rodeos. You can still see some of her seamstress work on some rodeo’s banners and flags. She still found time to can most all the vegetables the family ate along with her famous hot sauce. If you missed out on her Good Friday Fish Fry, she would just tell you “To bad you don’t need a invite just show up”

Aggie loved everyone and was quick to give you huge hug. Not just a quick little hug but a warm, heartfelt, tight held hug that you knew was filled with love! She had an old schoolwork ethic that she was proud to tell everyone she passed down to all her kids. She loved to play cards as much as she loved to cook. She never had a favorite food to cook or card game she liked better than another, she was just good at both and whatever else she did. She always had 4 or 5 quilts in the making in her shop. She loved to give her homemade quilts to family and friends. No two were ever alike.

Aggie is preceded in death by her husband Pete and Son William. She will be greatly missed by her children Calvin and Suanne Stenger (Worden, MT), Jim and Colleen Stenger (Victor, MT), Zane and Lorrie Stenger (Billings, MT), Willy Whittinghill (Las Vegas NV) Linda Heath (Talent OR) Grandchildren: Jordan and Yana Stenger (Saratoga, WY), Amanda and Bryant Lofgren (Littleton, CO), Morgan (Billings, MT), Cleryssa and Joe Darkenwald (Park City, MT) Cash and Bailee (Worden, MT), Alexandria and Zac Jokela (Billings, MT), George (Highlands Ranch, CO.), Great GrandChildren: Korsen, Kollins, Hans, Haddi, Lily Ann, Emma Lee and Jack.
