Beatrice G. Hawkins

New Cumberland, PA – Beatrice G. Hawkins, 96, of New Cumberland, PA, was called home by our eternal Father on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at her home surrounded by her family.  Born August 8, 1924, in Buffalo, NY, Mrs. Hawkins was the daughter of the late Leonard Gruszka and Sophia (Malewska) Gruszka.  She was also preceded in death by her husband: Roy J.D. Hawkins; and her son: Mark R. Hawkins.  Beatrice received her B.A. Degree in Education from Canisius College, Buffalo, NY, in 1949, when women were only allowed to go to school in the evenings because of the returning World War II veterans.  In 1954, she returned to Canisius College and received her Masters of Education.  Beatrice was an educator in the Harrisburg School District for 30 years.  Prior to that, she worked for the Girl Scouts of America.  Beatrice retired to Mooresburg, TN, where she was involved in local politics working beside her husband, Roy, who was the County Commissioner in Hawkins County, TN.  Beatrice is survived by her son: Roy Michael Hawkins and wife, Frances; and her daughters: Peggy L. Ballowe and husband, Ray; and Dr. Kristina Newcomer and husband, David; as well as 13 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.  Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Monday, September 28, 2020, from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M.  A funeral service will follow at 1:00 P.M.  Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.  A memorial mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Loreto at a later date with her cousin, Father Joseph Janaczek officiating.
