George J. Arcand Obituary

GEORGE J. ARCAND JUNE 24, 1946 ~ SEPTEMBER 21, 2020 George was born on Muskeg Lake First Nation and raised there by his parents Agnes and John Arcand. He is the second youngest of 11 siblings born to this union: Sam, Angeline, Henry, Victorine, Eva, Wilma, Wally, Jimmy and three brothers, Oliver, Emil and David, lost at infancy. George also loved his two stepsisters, Clemence Sand and Antoinette Arcand and stepbrother, JT Arcand as well as his niece, Delores Kenny, who was just like a little sister to him. George attended the day school on the reserve for a short period of time. Afterwards he attended the St. Michael’s Indian Residential School in Duck Lake. He carried on his schooling at Stobart High School in Duck Lake and St. Mary’s College in Prince Albert. After his schooling, George found work as a farm laborer, later grain elevator repair and construction in southern Saskatchewan, before he found local work with the furniture store, Nutrend. George began his corrections career with Court Worker Services in 1973. George eventually moved to the Prince Albert Adult Probation in 1977, beginning work with the Indian Probation Program then with the Adult Probation. Over the years, he has held almost every position on a T.P.H.D. basis including Program Supervisor and Regional Manager. It was during this time that George made many lifelong friends and he cherished these friendships. During his time with the Court Worker Program and the I.I.P. George sat on various boards and committees as he cared about serving and helping his community. George’s dedication to his profession was acknowledged when he received the Governor-General Award for Corrections Exemplary Service Medal in 1999. George retired from his lengthy career in corrections in 2006 with many fond memories and lifelong friends. Since 2011 and up until his passing, George sat as a board of director on the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation Investment Management Corporation. He was proud and honoured to hold this position. George married the love of his life, Beatrice, on November 27th, 1971 in Muskeg Lake, SK. Their love was a love story like no other and together they had three children, Cheryl (Paul), Sheldon, and April (Cameron), who George loved deeply and was so very proud of. George was also a proud, loving papa to his six beautiful granddaughters: Kailee, Lynsey, Quincy, Abby, Sofie, and Ellie. George was such a family man❤️When he wasn’t spending time with his family you could find George on the golf course. George was also a jack of all trades; he was a plumber, a carpenter, an electrician, a mechanic, a landscaper, a chauffeur, a vehicle detailer; whatever you needed he was there. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t do & wouldn’t do for his family and friends; rest assured it would be done to perfection as George took pride in everything he did. George is predeceased by his mother and father, Agnes & John Arcand, his sister, Angeline Gardipy, brother, Sam Arcand, his stepsisters, Clemence Sand and Antionette Arcand, stepbrother, JT Arcand, and 3 brothers, Oliver, Emil, and David lost in infancy. George will never be forgotten because he was and always will be a grounding, loving, guiding presence in all our lives. When evening shades are falling, And we sit in quiet alone, To our hearts there comes a longing If he only could come home. Friends may think we have forgotten When at times they see us smile. But they little know the heartache Our smiles hide all the while.
