William Martin Orr Obituary

Bill was a gentle and kind man. He loved and cared for his son Tyler. He cherished his wife Susan. He was thankful for his mother Daisy and father John. He had a burning passion for sheepdog herding. He loved and appreciated his many Border Collies and Great Pyrenees. Bill was a loyal Clemson Tiger. He was always interested in others and the many adventures of life. The world is smaller without him. Bill was born in Anderson, S.C. and grew up in the Berea community in Greenville, S.C. He graduated from Clemson University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1969. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a M.A. in Speech and Hearing Science in 1973. He was a commissioned officer in the Corp of Engineers of the United States Army. In 1974, Bill accepted a position in Anchorage for the State of Alaska Public Health serving the native population. His many trips to the small villages throughout Alaska were educational and fascinating. In 1980 when his son Tyler became ill, the family moved to Austin, TX where Bill cared for his son Tyler until he passed away in 1982. Bill then became a programmer for GTE in Stamford, CT; and later, Bill worked for IBM as a programmer and technical writer in Atlanta, GA and Raleigh, NC. In 2000, Bill retired to a 125 acre farm in Seneca, S.C. and began raising pure bred Angus cattle. Then he discovered the beauty of the working Border Collie which led him to pursue sheepdog herding and raising sheep. This inspired moving to Eagle Point, OR. where the land is wide open and the range ewes are challenging. In 2006 after ranching, Bill moved to Treasure Island, FL to boat and fish. After a year, Bill decided he missed farming and working dogs. He then moved to a small farm in Catlett, VA but missed the West. In 2019, finally settling in Springfield, OR with his wife and dog Louie, Bill said “his bucket list” was complete. Bill considered his best friends to be his childhood dogs Ike and Sparky, his Border Collies Boone, Max, Glenn, Lad, Sly, Roy, Tweed, Louie and his Great Pyrenees Bear and Sugar. He called his dog Boone his “BMW” since Boone was easy to train and enabled Bill to compete across the country and Canada at the highest levels of sheepdog herding. Bill and his dogs won many sheepdog trials over the years including the 2011 Reserve National Nursery Champion with his dog Sly. He also had a wonderful cat Princess for over 17 years. Bill has crossed the “Rainbow Bridge” with many of these amazing companions. Bill gave Susan a wonderful life. He was her happiness. Contributions to endowments with CureSMA (The Tyler William Orr Memorial Fund), Dogs for Better Lives (The Orr Family Dogs Fund), Clemson University (The Tyler William Orr Memorial Scholarship) and Furman University (The Daisy Martin Orr and John Rogers Orr Scholarship Fund) are appreciated. The family is requesting for no flowers to be sent. Thank you
