Eleanor Jane Zareski Obituary

Eleanor J. Zareski (age 93) October 4, 1926 - September 21, 2020 Beloved Mother of Steve (Sandi) Zareski; Carol (Tommy) Preshong; and Lisa (Mark) Wegleitner. Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 4, 1926 into an Irish family, she was the last surviving sibling of 10. Growing up, she loved all the coming and going of a large family. She and her siblings laughed a lot when they were young and even when they were older, keeping in touch and visiting one another’s families. She married Gordon K. Zareski, a boy from her Brooklyn neighborhood. After Gordon returned from service in WWII, they were married in 1952 and moved out West from Brooklyn NY to an adventurous life in Utah, Arizona, and Colorado. She went from the mass transportation of the city to learning how to drive a truck on the narrow, steep, rugged roads along the Canyon. They lived in the bottom of a huge Canyon in Colorado, while Gordon worked as a Geologist. Surrounded by majestic beauty of the canyons, natural arches, towering rock formations, desert wildlife, they swam in the Green River and shared cookouts in the evenings with friends. Life was simple, but good. Eventually they moved to Northern VA where they raised 3 children. Eleanor was a kind and loving mother. Eleanor was involved in volunteering in the schools during our Elementary years. She always took an active interest in our daily lives, our sports, and activities. She Loved music, antiquing, reading, cooking, baking, sewing, bowling, socializing, traveling, but mostly spending time with her family and friends. Eleanor was a strong Lady with a positive spirit, ready to try new things. Her family always came first, and throughout her entire life she had wonderful relationships with her children and their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She has always been a cherished treasure to our family, and will forever remain so in our hearts. . Eleanor is also survived by six beloved grandchildren, Lisa Shey, Shawn Preshong, Johnny Wegleitner, Kristina Murphy, Joseph Rutherford, Jennifer Rutherford; and seven cherished great-grandchildren, Aidan Preshong, Caleb Preshong, Ava Preshong, Landon Murphy, Evie Murphy, Morgan Rutherford, Easton Rutherford. Eleanor was dedicated to her profession and worked from 1964-1991, 27 years for the Fairfax County Public School System as the Administrative Assistant to the Director for Special Education, and prior to that as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Vocational Education. Soon colleagues became friends as they worked together to provide various educational programs to help students grow. Eleanor was always happy and had a good-natured personality. She was gifted in showing others how much she cared, by being a good listener and being supportive and making others feel important. She touched the lives of all who knew her, with her genuine kindness. She will be greatly missed, and lovingly remembered by all. . Services will be held on Tuesday, September 29,2020 at 1PM with and visitation 1 hour prior, at FAIRFAX MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 9902 Braddock Rd., Fairfax. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vistas Healthcare (Hospice) or the Alzheimer's Association.
