Obituary

With heavy hearts we say good-bye to our mother, baba, 'baba-baba', aunt and friend, Elsie Rehirchuk of Gilbert Plains, Manitoba who passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at the age of 93 years.

Elsie was born on April 16, 1927 in the Zoria district to Pearl (Szmon) and John Hrychuk.  In her early years the family moved to a farmsite south of Gilbert Plains where she attended Tanner School.

Her life revolved around all aspects of farm life; gardening, preserving, picking all sorts of berries, caring for the animals as well as picking roots/stones and stooking grain.

On June, 1944 she married Alex Rehirchuk, together they farmed with the in-laws, and soon had their own farm and all of farm life. In February 1947, Theodore David was born, and in July 1949, Doreen Lorraine. She was now a happy baba with grandchildren, Kenneth and Shelley Dohan, Brian and Darrell Rehirchuk. The complete blessings came with the arrival of great grandchildren; Lauren, Madison, Kayla and Taylor Rehirchuk, Dylana, Shelynn and Brendan Dohan, how exciting was that part of life when they visited.

She suffered with major health issues all of her life, but she managed as best as she could. She was a delegate for the Farmer's Union, part of a catering committee at the curling rink for many banquets. Sewing and cooking were her passions, along with fine needlework & crafts of all sorts. She served as the treasurer of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Gilbert Plains for 27 years.

Mom had her first dental filling at 65 and even started golfing at that early age! She truly did enjoy curling as well. Mom and dad did take a few bus trips to USA and Canada, and even made it to Florida with friends. Later life gave way to a few casino trips as well as bingo and card games which she really enjoyed. She is the last founding member of the Gilbert Plains Drop-In Center where she spent many days with her friends.

Many families needing help with weddings/funerals could count on her, where she cooked and arranged and hosted families to help them out.

Downsizing she moved to the Gilbert Plains Senior's Apartments, where she enjoyed life fully till July 2019, when she became a resident at the Gilbert Plains Care Home. Life was so different for her but the care-givers did their very best to make her days bearable till her last day - she made and lost some very dear friends there.

If friends so desire, donation in memory of Elsie may be made to the Gilbert Plains Drop-In Center, Gilbert Plains, MB R0L 0X0.

A Funeral Service was held for Elsie on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 2:00 pm from the Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre in Dauphin with Rev. Father Brent Kuzyk officiating. Interment followed in the Chatsworth Cemetery in Gilbert Plains, MB.

Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Elsie may be made to Gilbert Plains Drop-In Centre, Gilbert Plains, MB R0L 0X0.
