After a prolonged battle with triple negative breast cancer, the Booen family tragically lost their beloved Vicki “Mimi” Booen on September 17, 2020. Mimi passed with her devoted husband Michael Booen by her side, with whom she shared 41 blissful years of marriage. Mimi was the consummate matriarch of her family, imparting her unique brand of wisdom to her 4 brothers (Gary, John, Mike, Keith), 3 sons (Eric, Brett, and Kyle) and her 4 grandsons (Brody, Maxton, Tyler, and Jake). Mimi was dedicated to bringing joy, laughter, and affection to her family and the sea of friends she made across the United States. The selflessness of Mimi will always be remembered. She touched so many lives during her all too brief 63 years. Mimi began her life as a small-town girl growing up in Wheatland, CA. She was the only daughter of Chuck and Carol Schussler and the sister of 4 brothers. Mimi spent the majority of her life surrounded by men, and it helped her to develop a patented “No BS” approach to dealing with people. She was voted “Best All Around” at Wheatland High School along with the man who would turn out to be her future husband, Michael Booen. Mimi majored in Parks and Recreation Administration at Chico State University, a degree that undoubtedly established the foundation of her fun-loving life. She married Michael Booen in 1979 and began the nomadic life of an Air Force wife that saw her living in locales such as Palo Alto, Albuquerque, Waldorf, San Pedro, Torrance, Tucson, Dallas, and Mesa. Her most favorite “happy places” included Pinetop, Arizona and Rocky Point, Mexico. Mimi found her true calling in 1982 when her first son Eric was born. Mimi took to motherhood like a fish to water and had two additional sons in the next 6 years (Kyle and Brett). They are forever grateful for Mimi’s patience and wisdom in deftly facing the challenge of raising three boys. Mimi’s husband Mike might have been in the military, but Mimi directed her family better than any general. When Mimi finally added another female to the family (Eric’s wife, Elizabeth Booen), she was overjoyed to finally have another female presence in the family. The birth of her first two grandsons, Maxton and Brody, and the subsequent set of twins, Jake and Tyler, allowed Vicki to earn her moniker of “Mimi” and share her “tough but fair” guidance with a new generation of Booen men. Mimi looked back in her final days and was at peace seeing the lives she created and the success she helped her family achieve. Mimi shared many other passions including cooking, pickleball, bowling, tennis, quilting, volleyball, softball, and traveling. She made five cross country car treks spanning the US (with 3 boys in tow) and her travels across the world brought her to Australia, Scotland, Mexico, and Greece (among many other places). Mimi relished a good competition and always made sure that sports were a top priority in her family. In her later years, Mimi’s wall space became adorned with numerous pickleball and tennis medals. In Mimi’s book, if you weren’t winning, you weren’t trying hard enough! Mimi loved teaching her grandchildren how to make cookies and enjoyed eating them, too. Her quilting skills created many amazing pieces that will be treasured by her family forever. Mimi loved a good party and always tried to make sure people were having the time of their lives. Mom, Mimi, Vicki: your family and friends love you so much. We will miss you forever. We had the time of our lives with you.
