Patricia Buhl Obituary

Patricia H. Buhl, Ph.D. July 13, 1930 – September 16, 2020 Resided in North Palm Beach, FL and Bethesda, MD Patricia Buhl (Hoffman), age 90, died unexpectedly in her sleep on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 in Rockville, Maryland where she had been recovering from a recent fall. Pat was born on July 13th, 1930 in Somerville, New Jersey to the late George W. and Nappie Hoffman. She was raised in Bound Brook and Middlesex, NJ with her five brothers and sisters. She met John E. Buhl, Jr., the love of her life and husband of 69 years, in high school. John graduated as a civil engineer from Lehigh University and commissioned into the Army and Pat was a chemistry major at the New Jersey College for Women (Rutgers University) when they married in 1951. The wedding took place at Camp Carson, Colorado Springs, CO prior to John’s deployment as a 2nd Lt. to Korea during the Korean War. Following John’s return, they moved to Bethesda, MD where John had a position with the David Taylor Model Basin. After their three children were school-aged, Pat earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Maryland in 1975. She worked as a chemist in the private sector for a short while before starting a federal government career with the Department of Labor and Department of Energy from which she retired in 1992. John and Pat developed a mutual interest in real estate, investing in the DC area and passing on their knowledge to their children. Cold DC winters sent them south in 1982 when they drove to Florida, and slept on the beach for two days to hold their place in line to purchase a new vacation condominium. Eventually they moved to Florida, making North Palm Beach their home, while returning to Bethesda often to see friends and family. Pat and John were predeceased by their son Major Paul T. Buhl, USA (ret) (1957-1996). Pat was predeceased by her three brothers John, George and Richard Hoffman and her sisters Margaret Citrenbaum and Gladys Leoniy. Pat’s surviving family include husband John, daughter Constance Buhl (and her partner Stephen Clark) of Seattle, Washington, daughter Katherine Buhl (and her husband Robert Witter) of Bernalillo, New Mexico, daughter-in-law Yongnan Buhl of Bethesda, Maryland; grandson John M. Buhl of Seattle; and many nieces and nephews. A private service will be held At Pumphrey Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
