Joan Alfreda Cunningham WAKAW, Saskatchewan Obituary

Joan Alfreda Cunningham

We are deeply saddened to advise that Joan Alfreda Cunningham of Wakaw, Saskatchewan lost her battle and passed peacefully on September 5, 2020 in the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. Joan was predeceased by her parents John and Rosina Inkster, her son Stuart in 1980, her husband Jim in June 1999, her grandson Travis in August 1999 and her son Ken in December 2001. She is survived by her daughters Heather of Lloydminster, Alberta and Bev of Blue River, BC and, a daughter in law Jeanette of Smeaton, 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and her sister Gail of Indian Head, Saskatchewan. Joan was born in Tisdale on September 26, 1935. She grew up on the farm north of Weeks and went to Dunwell school for her early years. She married James Cunningham in 1952, and they had 4 children. The family often went to BC for work in the winter returning to Weekes in the summer. In 1961 they moved to Prince George and over the next few years lived in Quesnel then back to Prince George. In Prince George they had family so there was lots of visiting and entertaining. Joan was always ready to throw another bone in the soup for visitors. Joan worked out of the home and made many friends in Prince George. In 1973 they moved back to the original Cunningham homestead in Yellow Creek, Saskatchewan. Jim and Joan became janitors at the Yellow Creek school until 1998. In the meantime they bought a house in Yellow Creek and Joan had running water and reliable power again since she left Prince George. Jim passed away in June 1999 and in 2000 Joan moved into Lakeview Pioneer Lodge suites in Wakaw. She continued to do house cleaning around Wakaw into her 70’s. She was a member of Club 99 and regularly visited many friends and family. She also loved to travel and was able to go into the US and also visited Hawaii. She went to BC many times to visit family and friends. The family wishes to thank the friends and community in and around Wakaw for their support for Joan. Thank you to the nurses and doctors who looked after Joan the last few weeks ensuring she was comfortable. A Memorial Service was held in the Chapel of Kushneryk Funeral Service in Wakaw, SK with Interment of the Urn at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Melfort, SK. Donation in memory of Joan may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Diabetes Association or to the Royal University Hospital.
