Donald W. Runyan

Donald W. Runyan Don passed away peacefully in Brooksville, Florida on September 16, 2020, after battling vascular dementia, just days before his 84th birthday. Sharonville, OH was home, though he and his wife Susan spent the past twenty winters in Brooksville, Florida. Don is preceded in death by his father, Harold W. Runyan and mother, Gladys Runyan Shaffer. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Susan, daughter Amy (Mark) Boland of Mendota Heights, MN, son Brian Runyan of Brooksville, FL, daughter Cheryl Chaney of Mason OH, grandchildren Connor and Matthew Boland and Mary, Blaise, Adam and Vance Chaney, Don was born on September 26th, 1936 in Cincinnati, OH. He attended Deer Park High School, graduating in 1954. He earned his Associates Degree at the University of Cincinnati. He then began his career at the age of 19, at General Motors following in the footsteps of his father Harold. Don worked at the GM Parts Division in Sharonville, Ohio, retiring in 1994 at the young age of 54. During that time he served in The U.S. Army National Guard from 1961 to 1967. Early in his career at GM, Don met the love of his life, a Kelly Girl working at GM named Susan Ferguson. She was hooked on their first date when Don picked her up in his red ‘58 Chevy Impala convertible with a continental kit. Don and Susan were married on October 20, 1961 and started building a family. He had a love for cars and is still known today for his Big Red Truck. Most days Don could be seen walking in the neighborhood with his Weimaraner or working in the yard. Don’s rock solid foundation of faith, family and friends guided him through his whole life until the very end. He had a fierce love for his family and was so proud to share any accomplishments made by his children and grandchildren. He was a proud and contributing member of his Sharonville community. He was a member of the Sharonville Jaycees for over 15 years where he made so many, wonderful lifelong friends. He was the head coach of his daughter Cheryl’s SYO softball team for 9 years, leading them to 9 championships. He was a 40+ year member of the Sharonville United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sharonville Republican Club. Don had many interests... He was an avid golfer and nothing made him happier than being on the golf course with his son, Brian or his son-in-law, Mark. He was a big sports fan and endured years of the Bengals, and loved the Cincinnati Reds. His sense of humor was legendary and his unique laugh was contagious. Nothing in life brought him more pride and joy than to be surrounded by his family. His memory and legacy will live on in his children and grandchildren as an example of what it is to be a great man, husband, father and grandfather. The family will be making arrangements for a celebration of life service in Cincinnati to be announced later.

Hard to put into words or even cohesive thoughts the memories I have of Don. So much laughter, so much love. I don't remember a time when the Runyans were not part of my life. Prayers for strength and healing for family. Love you all.
