Guy Wolffarth Obituary

Guy D. Wolffarth passed away peacefully on September 15, 2020, after having a severe heart attack on September 10. He was born January 23, 1960, to Janice Gray and Rusty Wolffarth in Carlsbad, NM. He was a graduate of Las Cruces High School and moved to Alaska at the age of 17, where he worked for 10 years in Anchorage (for Pitney Bowes) and on the North Slope as a bull cook. He returned to Las Cruces in 1989 from Austin TX, where he had lived for a couple of years and where he was diagnosed with AIDS. In Las Cruces he worked for a time as the local director of NMAPLA (New Mexico Association of People Living With AIDS). He loved animals, particularly his dogs, and his horses, especially Hubba and Drifter. He was a member of LCHA (Las Cruces Horseman’s Association) and served for a time on their board of directors. He participated for many years in their gymkhanas and won numerous awards, including two saddles. He rode Hubba on the day of his heart attack. He was very proud of being a 30-year survivor of AIDS. He is survived by his partner of 30 years, Stephen Helmreich, his brother Randy Wolffarth (Carlsbad), and his sisters Paige Chavez (Las Cruces) and Kandy Wolffarth (Desoto TX), and their families, including aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and in-laws too numerous to mention. His mother and father, his stepfather (Jerry Peterson), his sister Stacey Peterson, his brother Justin Wolffarth, his niece Aimee Wolffarth, and great nephew Shayne Wolffarth preceded him in death. A small graveside service will be held at 9 am on Saturday, September 26, at Hillcrest Cemetery for family and close friends of Guy. No flowers are requested, but donations can be made to Southwest Care Center, 649 Harkle Road, Suite E, Santa Fe, NM 87505. Arrangements by Getz Funeral Home, 1410 E. Bowman Ave. Las Cruces, NM 88001. Please visit www.getzcares.com to sign the local online guest book.
