Born and raised in Raleigh, Camille spent summers on the Outer Banks with her grandparents. She graduated from Broughton High School and while attending Meredith College met her future husband, Richard, when they both were members of a community orchestra.  After marriage, she completed her undergraduate studies at East Tennessee State University, continued graduate work at Indiana State University, and then the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received her Master of Fine Arts, all while raising four children, a menagerie of pets, and working as an art instructor at Davidson County Community College.  In between family and work, Camille was involved in a range of activities from Girl Scout leader to field editor for an Appalachian Trail guidebook. Upon retirement she enjoyed managing the First Colony Inn in Nags Head with her family. She also volunteered as a Guardian ad Litem representing the interests of foster children in court proceedings.

A life-long liberal, Camille was a strong, independent, and sometimes fierce woman with boundless energy.  She was an accomplished artist, an avid reader, loved classical music, travel, and all things outdoors including backpacking, hiking, camping, and bird watching. For many summers she was a fixture at High Rock Lake captaining her Thistle sailboat aptly named "Hurricane." She was a mentor and friend to many.
