Jean S. McAfee Obituary

Jean Sadie (Bray) McAfee, age 81 of Marietta, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday September 15th, 2020. Jean was born on December 27th, 1938 in Southampton England to the late Arthur and Sadie Bray. Jean lived a full life full of historic milestones, world travel and often unplanned adventure. She grew up a toddler in the midst of WWII, where she endured German bombing raids sometimes on a daily basis and remembered watching the Allied troops depart Southampton with her Mum, on D-Day in 1944. In 1951, Jean along with her Mother and Sister Jan, moved from England to Basra, Iraq when her Father took a job with British Petroleum (BP). She found herself attending a Catholic boarding school in Nicosia, Cyprus, to continue a traditional British education. While away, she learned many culturally rich skills, including French, and a gained new baby Brother back in Iraq, Roger. In 1956 Arthur decided to move the family to New Zealand when he took a job with Heil Trucking. New Zealand was on the verge of independence, but was still not free from British Parliament Legislative rule. In New Zealand, Jean became quite a successful and beautiful young lady. She was a competitive swimmer, a hairdresser, and for a very brief period was in the running to be Miss New Zealand, until it was found out she was a British Citizen. In 1962, Jean found herself wanting to travel to America where she found a job as a hairdresser in Atlanta and would eventually meet her future husband, Scott McAfee after he was discharged from the Army. They would marry in 1963 at St. Stephen Methodist Church in Marietta, and a year later they would have their first son Greg, and then their second son, Shawn in 1968. The Family would continue to live in Marietta for the rest of her life, with a few moves in between. Jean would work off and on in retail sales in the Marietta area, where Scott would eventually retire from Lockheed Martin Aerospace in 2002. Jean was an avid East Marietta Little League Baseball and Faith Lutheran Church Scouting Mom, all while becoming a dedicated lover of all of her pets, both cats and dogs. Jean continued to be a dedicated member of St.Stephen Methodist Church throughout her long life and was preceded in death by her sister, Jan, and son Shawn. Surviving are her husband Scott, brother Roger (Sue) Bray of Mata Mata, New Zealand, son Greg (Mary Ann) McAfee of Acworth, grandchildren Hunter (fiance Annie Webb) of Marietta, Hayden (SPC Christina Pacetti) of Ft. Eustis, VA, and Amaury of Saint-Germain-en-Laye France. Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna is in charge of arrangements. www.carmichaelcares.com 770-435-4467.
