Gene D. Van Roekel

Mr. Gene Van Roekel, age 73, of Hull, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2020, at the Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. There will be a private family graveside service on Saturday, September 19, at 10:30am, at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. The Rev. Harlan De Jong will officiate. Visitation without the family will be on Friday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. Gene Donald was born on September 25, 1946, in Hull, the son of Gershom Donald and Edna (Vermeer) Van Roekel. He was raised in Hull, where he was drafted into the United States Army after graduating from the Boyden Hull High School. On June 14, 1969, he married Carol Marlene Van Kley in Sioux Center. They made their home in Hull, where they raised their family. In addition to farming, Gene owned and operated VR Repair in Hull which he sold to his son, Greg, in 2004. Mr. Van Roekel was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he had served as a deacon and an elder. He was also a member of the Hull Christian School Board and the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post in Hull. He enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family, and in his earlier years, he liked to bowl and play fast pitch softball. Survivors include his wife of more than 51 years; four children, Galen Van Roekel, and his wife, Kimberly, of St. John, Indiana; Lisa, and her husband, Brian De Boer, of Sioux Center; Greg Van Roekel, and his wife, Sara, of Hull; and Ryan Van Roekel, of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren, Kylie, and her husband, Ben Buma; Mackenzie, and her husband, Blake Mellema; Cambrie Van Roekel; Gabe Van Roekel; Braden De Boer; Brock De Boer; Gage Van Roekel; Tyson Van Roekel; and Grayden Van Roekel; three sisters, Beth Westra, of Fulda, Minnesota; Carole, and her husband, Walter Kilmanas, of Minnetrista, Minnesota; and Linn, and her husband, Brad Vermeer, of Overland Park, Kansas; a brother-in-law, Jim Rausch, of Rowlett, Texas; Carol’s siblings, Marilynn Ribbens, and her husband, Lyle Gritters; Bill Van Kley, and his wife, Sandy; and Leon Van Kley, and his wife, Kathy, all of Sioux Center; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife’s parents, Floyd and Marie Van Kley; a sister, Marilyn Rausch; and two brothers-in-law, Dwayne Westra and Tim Ribbens.
