Harold R. McKay Obituary

Hobe Sound, FL and Brownville Jct. – Harold “Hal” Robert McKay, 92, passed away from natural causes on September 15, 2020, in Florida. Harold grew up in Brownville Jct. He was an avid basketball player and hunter. During his youth he began working for the railway, loading coal and water into the steam engines of the day, learning over the years Morse code and becoming in time, a train dispatcher handling rail traffic through the Maine – New Brunswick corridor. Following high school he obtained a commercial pilots license and served in Korea, 1950-1952, in the US Army First Cavalry. His Morse code skills were put to good use. After the war, he met and married his beloved Betty and raised three sons. In 1960, he took the family to Port Cartier, Quebec, Canada with US Steel where they worked and lived for 25 years. Harold was an exceptional railroad man; starting as a dispatcher and retiring as the manager for all railroad operations. He lived his life quietly and courageously, and of course, on railroad time. His love for basketball continued as he first played and then coached the men’s league team for a dozen years or more. He lost his wife to cancer in 1987 and began traveling the world consulting on robotic train operations. After retiring from consulting, and having spent one too many cold winters in Canada, Hal’s journey eventually brought him to Hobe Sound, Florida in 1995, where he lived and made his home for 25 years. He loved Florida and had a lot of friends there. He was an avid bridge player and walker. The Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge was one of his favorite places to walk. He is survived by his three sons, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and two sisters and their families. A graveside service with military honors will be held 2:00p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2020, at the family lot in Pine Tree Cemetery, Brownville Jct.
