Brian R. Whalen Obituary

Brian R. Whalen, 73 years of age, passed away on Tuesday, September 8th, 2020 at his home in Vancouver, Washington. He was born in Portland, Oregon on February, 25th 1947 to Barton Whalen and Violet (Wright) Whalen. Upon retirement, he moved to Vancouver Washington where he lived for the remainder of his life.

Brian graduated from Madison High School in 1965, completed his BS at PSU in 1972, then obtained a Masters in Criminal Justice from the University of Portland in 1978.

Brian served as a member of the Air Force Reserves from 1967-1972. He was a Police Officer with the Portland Police Bureau for 30 years (1971-2001). He served for 23 years as a patrol officer followed by 7 years as a Detective with the Child Abuse Team.  In 2001, Brian returned to work as a Facility Security Officer with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. He was promoted to Civil Deputy in 2005 and retired from MSCO in 2009.

Brian’s favorite pastimes over the years consisted of fishing, model trains, watching NFL football, Astronomy, and Civil War History.  He had a sharp sense of humor that would bring a smile to those in his company. He always made time for his children and grandchildren and was always up for an adventure.  His stories will be missed by friends and family alike. He will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife Beth (Collins) Whalen, his brother Bart Whalen, his sister Diane McSorley, his former wife, Stephanie (Stewart) Whalen, and their sons Theo and Adam Whalen, and grandchildren Jack Whalen and Mia Whalen.

He is preceded in death by his parents Barton Whalen and Violet (Wright) Whalen and former wife Catherine Yvonne Whalen.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 18th, 2020 from 10 am-8 pm at Rose City Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. A private memorial will follow on Saturday, September 19th followed by a reception at 11:45 am at Rose City Cemetery.

Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in his name.
