Clifford Henry Olson Obituary

Clifford Henry Olson passed away on September 7th, 2020 at the age of 109; he had been the 2nd oldest man in Canada at that time! Cliff was born at home in Duval on February 17, 1911 to Martin and Clara Olson. He was the 2nd oldest of seven children. They were a farming family. He was a very athletic and excelled in both hockey and baseball. Ivan and Cliff loved to pull tricks on their younger siblings! In 1949 Cliff, Ivan, Merlin, Marie and their mother Clara moved to Porcupine Plain to homestead. Cliff was very creative and innovative. He twisted trees that upon maturing he turned into table bases or canes and carved several wooden chains out of broom sticks. Cliff made life-size cartoon characters that delighted both the children and adults alike! Along with his brothers they made and sold rocking horses throughout Canada. Cliff was active in the community. He drove the school bus, was a 4-H member and leader, on the Wheat Pool Board and worked with the handicapped. Cliff was an Elder in the Community of Christ Church and it was at a reunion that he met Ruby Brady and they both knew they had found their sole mate! They were married in 1979 and made Porcupine their home. Cliff was welcomed into her family with open hearts as everyone could clearly see their love for each other; they were inseparable for 27 years! Both were artistic and always supported and encouraged each other to pursue their passions. I think everyone in the family received a rug they had woven. Cliff was also a poet, but you can be sure that his words were graced with humour and he would have a twinkle in his eyes as he read them! Cliff seemed to have an affinity with children and he loved to watch their eyes light up as he showed them a whirl-a-gig he created or would do a trick! Cliff spent his later years in the Red Deer Regional Nursing Home and he was always delighted when his Alberta family came to visit with him! I am sure that Ruby was waiting in heaven to greet Cliff and that they have been reunited again!
