Sheri Sandgren Mitchell Obituary

With immense sorrow we share the news of the death of Sheri Sandgren Mitchell, who passed away suddenly on the morning of September 9th, 2020 in Greenville, SC.

Sheri loved to travel and connect with others, cultivating and sustaining lasting friendships around the world. She adored music and shared her love of it with everyone she met. She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother of three, grandmother of nine, and a friend of many. At this moment of deep sadness, we are blessed to honor the incredible life she lived.
The second child of Leo and Gloria Sandgren, Sheri was born in Austin, Minnesota. Her parents were called to be missionaries, and she grew up in France and Africa as her family served those with the greatest need. Her vivacious personality won her many friends everywhere they traveled. She spent many a day helping to raise her younger brothers and many a night practicing piano on a wooden table with a painted keyboard, hearing the notes in her head as she played them over and over.

Sheri returned to the United States for college where she was wooed by a gentleman from North Carolina named Bobby. Before long she fell in love and agreed to settle down. This year they celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. While raising three children, she earned a Master’s degree in Musicology and built a thriving music studio. She went on to teach music at Spartanburg Methodist College. Over the past 40 years she served as a judge of piano competitions around the country and shared her passion for music with thousands of students.

She taught her sons from a young age to love our neighbors and to spread joy through art and music. She had a special relationship with her own mother, and we are heartened to know that she and Gloria are now together again. She is survived by her husband, three children, and nine grandchildren.

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” (Proverbs 17:22)

“If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.“ (I John 1:7)

We are humbled and grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers. We understand that most of our friends and family are unable to travel due to the ongoing pandemic, and a traditional funeral is not an option. We are planning a formal memorial service at a later date when loved ones can attend.

With love and gratitude,
Bob, Robert, David, and Wesley
