Penelope Busch Bashore Obituary

Penny Bashore died peacefully on Thursday at her home after a short illness. She was born in Oak Park, Illinois, to Ruth Olivia and Lee Sylvester Busch, Jr. After graduating from Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio, Penny graduated from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She was passionate about her community, friends, and family, which she carefully nurtured during her lifetime. They all will cherish their memories of her. Her family moved to Huntsville in 1976 and she immediately began contributing to the Huntsville/Madison area as only Penny could. Known for her efficiency, tenaciousness, and consistency, she was a member of the Huntsville Museum of Art Guild since 1979 and served one term as President. She was presented the respected Doris Darling Award for her years of service and leadership to the Museum of Art. Penny was an active member of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild since 1982; she served as President, chaired the Symphony Ball, and for over 30 years chaired the Acquisitions Committee for Crescen-Dough Auction. She was also a longtime member of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Association Board of Directors, chaired the 2000 Vive le Livre for the Huntsville Library Foundation, and was a founding member of the Gothic Guild. During the 1980’s, she was instrumental in the conception and production of the annual Zeta Tau Alpha Alumnae fashion show/luncheon, which benefited the Huntsville Museum of Art’s programs for children with special needs who attended the Mental Health Center. Penny also received the prestigious Virginia Hammill Simms Memorial Award for contributions for the arts in 1987. Penny delivered meals weekly for Meals on Wheels for 40 years. She chaired committees for the 2010 Medal of Honor Gala and the American Cancer Society Summer Lights Gala. She was an avid and loyal season ticket holder for UAHuntsville Basketball. She loved her Charger Basketball. Penny is survived by her daughter, Lara Bashore Isbell and husband, Kent T. Chojnacki; grandsons, Walker and Eli Isbell; step-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Karl Chojnacki, all of Huntsville; sisters, Kathryn Busch of Madison, Alabama, and Cynthia Busch and her partner, John Knox, of Excelsior, Minnesota; nephew, Asher Busch Bundlie of Brooklyn, New York; and niece, Hannah Bundlie of St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Lara’s father, Charles Alan “Chuck” Bashore resides in Madison, Alabama. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 12, 2020 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, or the Huntsville Humane Society.
