Lurine S. Knight

BETHUNE – Mrs. Lurine Stack Knight was born in Cordova, S.C., the youngest of ten children to the late Medicous James and Emily Victoria Smoak Stack on July 20, 1925. She became a member of Sandy Grove United Methodist Church since moving to Bethune to be near her daughter and family. In Bethune with the help of her family, she became the caregiver for her older sister, Estelle and her niece, Virginia Jane Muckenfuss. Prior to this she began babysitting children to avoid the empty nest syndrome. Her hobbies were hunting and fishing which was the highlight of her life, while teaching a love of outdoors to the children. Gardening especially flowers was another favorite pastime. She also loved the annual family reunions. Surviving are a daughter, Doris McGougan (Heyward) of Bethune; son, Ronald Ellis Knight (Linda) of Lexington, Ind.; brother, Harold Stack (Blanche) of West Jefferson, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Ray Carolyn Stack of Ridgeville, S.C.; daughter-in-law, Lorraine Knight of Cross, S.C.; grandchildren, Victoria M. Steen and Baron H. McGougan, Jr. of Bethune, Ronald B. Knight, Cathy June Morgan and Wendy Elaine Oconnor of Bedford, Kentucky, Jerry James Knight, Jr., of Baeaville, Calif., Thomas Christopher Knight of McKinney, Texas; step-grandchildren, Bobby and David Knight of Cross, S.C.; 25 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Knight also had numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly just like her own grands. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Augustus; and sons, Wayne Edward and Jerry James Knight; brothers, Medicus James Stack, Jr., Milton Stack, Leland Stack, Claudius Stack; and sisters, Leu Belle Rickenbaker, Alberta O’Cain, Estelle Muckenfuss and Frances Smith. Funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. A graveside service will be held on Monday 2:00 p.m. in Highland Memorial Park, Jedburg, S.C. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, Tenn. 38101 or Alzheimer’s Association South Carolina Chapter, 4124 Clemson Blvd, Suite L, Anderson, S.C. 29621. We the family could never and won’t ever forget the staff and caregivers of Karesh Long Term Care Camden, also those staff persons involved with the Alzheimer’s Research Program at the Medical University Teaching Hospital where she was a client/subject for three years in Charleston, S.C. while living in Bethune.
