Thomas (Tom) George Johnstone Obituary

Thomas (Tom) George Johnstone passed away peacefully at home in Kelowna on September 3, 2020 succumbing to cancer. He battled through many health ailments over the last few years with the iron will and determination he has exhibited his whole life. Unfortunately, this last battle was not one he could win. Tom will be greatly missed by his loving wife Robin; his sister Sandra; his children Jay (Karrie), Krista, and April-Dawn; grandchildren Courtney, Patrick, Parker, Presley, Pierce, Makena, Kaia, and Lani; niece Jen (Don); niece Christine (Rob) and their sons Liam and Thomas. Born March 2nd, 1942 in Ottawa to George and Peggy Johnstone, the second of their two children along with his older sister Sandra. His passion for sports was apparent early on and he would go on to become a star athlete at Fisher Park High School. He excelled at most everything he tried including track, football, tennis, basketball, skiing and hockey, racking up many trophies in the process. He greatly enjoyed spending summers at their family cottage in Tenaga playing tennis under the tutelage of Des Wallace, with his Tenaga buddies Willy Williams, Ian Miller, Hugh Cody, and the McIntyre boys. Tom also went on to play football at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. Tom married his first wife, Sandee, in Ottawa in 1965. They lived in Montreal until 1969 before moving west, to Edmonton where son Jay was born in 1971. Shortly after, they moved to Kelowna where they would reside permanently, and their daughter Krista was born there in 1974. His love of sports would carry on in Kelowna where he taught skiing at Big White, played tennis, and competed in triathlons for several years. One of his biggest accomplishments was completing the Hawaii Ironman triathlon in 1985. He worked in the steel industry his whole career, first with Dominion Bridge in Montreal, with A.C. Leslie Steel in Edmonton, and Lynx Brand/SIR in Kelowna. The recession of the early 1980’s forced him to look for new opportunities and in 1984 he ventured out and started his own company, Armada Steel. Through his hard work and determination, it would become one of the leading rebar fabrication companies in the Okanagan valley. Jay would eventually take over the business, and Krista worked there for a time as well. In 1992, Tom would meet his soul mate, Robin, who he would go on to marry in 1994. They had a close, intimate bond and would share many adventures and laughs over the years. Their love of travelling and their Harley Davidsons would take them on many epic trips covering all corners of North America from Alaska and Yukon to the Baja and Mexico, across Canada to Newfoundland, through the states and of course, Sturgis, South Dakota. Their love for each other remained strong through all the challenges they faced with Tom’s various health battles. Robin provided great care for him up until his last days. Tom was devoted to his family and a great friend to many. He was always there to support family and friends in times of need. A gifted story and joke teller, he brought life to any room or gathering. He was actively involved in the community, prominently with the Kelowna Aqua Jets swim club, the Kelowna Apple Triathlon and Okanagan Sun football team. His active lifestyle and passion for sports carried over to his kids and grandkids, and he would always be there on the sidelines to cheer them on at all their various sports, activities, and championships. He will be greatly missed but remembered fondly by all. As per Tom’s wishes, there will be no funeral service for him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements are in the care of Everden Rust Funeral Services & Crematorium, West Kelowna Arrangement Centre (250-768-8925). Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.everdenrust.com.
