Gerald Eugene "Bud" McCann Obituary

Gerald “Bud” Eugene McCann Sr., age 93 of Jamesport, MO passed away Wednesday, September 9th, 2020 at his home in Jamesport from COVID-19.  Bud was born on May 10th, 1927 the son of Jett and Marguerite (Harrison) McCann in Farber, MO.  He grew up in Farber and Hardin, MO.  Bud graduated from Central High School near Hardin, MO in 1945. On February 26th, 1952 he was united in marriage to Martha Joy in Independence, MO. They were married for almost 50 years before she passed away in 2002.

Bud was a dairy farmer most of his life. In addition to farming, Bud loved to do wood working. He made all kinds of boxes, benches, cabinets, wooden wagons and decorative items. He referred to himself as a “wood butcher” and had a saw decorated with the Wood Butcher title over his shop door.  Note to anyone who bought an antique from Bud, he saved old wood and rusty nails for a reason, you might want to check the provenance of your “antique” closely!  He delighted in his creative skills along these lines.  Bud also owned a saw sharpening business for many years and was one of the few who could sharpen and correctly set the teeth of almost any kind of saw.  He loved hand tools and enjoyed collecting them along with marbles, pocket knifes, shell pencils and endless nuts, bolts and screws!

He moved to Jamesport about 10 years ago where he drove for the Amish community.  He loved living in Jamesport and could be seen regularly sitting downtown watching people or hanging out at the produce auction.  Bud was a people person and was always willing to lend a helping hand.  He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. Bud’s family wishes to thank Sherri Smith and her staff for the loving care they provided him in the last years of his life.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, wife Martha, brother Harrison McCann, and brother Robert McCann.  Survivors include: daughter Joy McCann and partner Carol Fagan, daughter Nancy (Tim) Clancy of Florida, son Tim (Patti) McCann of Lebanon, KY, brother David McCann, Raytown, Mo, 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members also survive.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Jamesport Community Association in care of the funeral home. There is no scheduled family visitation. Graveside service: 1 PM, Tuesday, September 29th, 2020, New Hope Cemetery, rural Hardin, MO. Arrangements entrusted to the care and direction of Stith Funeral Home, Jamesport, MO.
