Adolph LeRoy Opsal Obituary

Adolph LeRoy Opsal, the son of Olai and Mildred (Hanson) Opsal, was born on October 15, 1928, and departed this life on September 8, 2020, at the age of 91 due to complications from the Coronavirus.

He lived in Armstrong his entire life, attending Halfa School for 2 years, then Armstrong Community School, graduating in 1946. Following graduation, he worked for Jim McIntire at the DX Station until 1951 when he joined the U.S. Army, serving in Germany until 1953.

LeRoy met the love of his life Dona Jean Freitag on a blind date and they have been inseparable since then. They married November 8, 1953, in Sherburn, MN. He owned the Standard Oil Station and tank wagon service in Armstrong from 1953 -1962. LeRoy became a Rural Letter Carrier in 1962 and drove his route, which he loved, until he retired in 1991.

LeRoy was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church and served as President, Treasurer, Sunday School teacher and the choir for over 50 years. He was an accomplished man with many interests and talents, continuously working to improve the community, serving as a fireman for 38 years, was a 9 term Mayor for the City of Armstrong, 2 terms on the school board, was instrumental in starting the ambulance service and served 25 years as an ambulance EMT, 30 years on Emmet County Judicial Committee, co-chairman of the centennial celebration, President and Site Manager for the Armstrong Housing and member of the Betterment Club. LeRoy was a lifetime V.F.W member and a charter member of the American Legion.
He had numerous interests and enjoyed golfing, traveling, reading, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

LeRoy was preceded in death by parents Olai and Mildred Opsal, sisters, Ardyth, Ardis, Muriel and husband Melvin Brown, brother Effner, brother Lyndon and daughter-in-law Judy.

He is survived by his wife Dona, son Ross Opsal (Denise) and his daughter Sarah Opsal, daughter Wendy Oleson (Bill), children Mandy Howell (Thomas), Lucas Oleson (Katie) and Joshua Oleson, daughter Michele Doskocil (David Vance) and her children Hayden Doskocil (Megan Lappe) and Emma Lindsey (Nate). Great Grandchildren Joshua Oleson Jr., Jo Oleson, Jayda Oleson, Eli Oleson, Carly Oleson, William Howell. Special Niece Karen Sanftner. Sisters-In-Law Cheryl Opsal, Betty Opsal, Norma Benson, Lois Peterson and many nieces and nephews.
