Maxine Claverie Sherman

Maxine Claverie Sherman passed away peacefully on September 7, 2020 at the age of 78. The second of five children, Maxine was born on July 7, 1942, in Donaldsonville, LA, to George Claverie Sr. and Irene Williams. She completed her elementary and high school education at St. Catherine of Sienna. Possessing a natural talent within her hands and an eye for beauty, she went on to earn Bachelor's and Master’s Degrees in Art Education and Counseling (respectively) from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. After completing her degrees, she educated the minds of the future in the Arts and English within the Junior High division of the Ascension Parish Public School System. Maxine married the stunning gentleman Joseph Sullivan Sherman and was blessed with the arrival of a baby girl in 1975. For 20 years, Maxine dedicated her time and talents to the children of Donaldsonville through the educational system until retirement. Beneath her rock-solid armored exterior, she was a very kind and generous spirit who was driven to always champion the underdog and share her blessings with others in need. This drive led her into the care and life-skill education of the mentally disabled residents of Donaldsonville through Mary Marcombe Home and Donaldsonville Area ARC. Also an engaged community activist, Maxine remained, until death, an active member of St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church, the Knights of St. Peter Claver St. Augustine Court #37 Ladies’ Auxiliary, Fr. John A. McShane Fourth Degree Ladies of Grace, the Louisiana Education Association, and the National Education Association. Maxine was incredibly devoted to her family. She is survived by her daughter, Nikia Sherman Redmond (of Houston, TX); son-in-law, Dias R. Redmond (of Houston, TX); two grandchildren, Taylor and Dias R. Redmond II (of Houston, TX); two sisters, Sally Anne Claverie (of San Francisco, CA) and Isabella Claverie McCants (of Phoenixville, PA); brother-in-law, Robert McCants Jr. (of Phoenixville, PA); two step-daughters, Cheryl Wright (of Flint, MI) and Rhonda Davis Mumphrey (of Donaldsonville, LA); two sisters-in-law, Emelda Parker (of Napoleonville, LA) and Ruth Johnson (of Paincourtville, LA). She also leaves to mourn a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, Joseph Sullivan Sherman; her brother, George Nicholas Claverie Jr.; and her sister, Marie Claverie Childs. Maxine will be greatly missed by all those who were blessed to have shared in her life journey. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 18, 2020 at St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church in Donaldsonville, LA. Her ashes will be laid to rest in Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Mausoleum in Donaldsonville, LA. Due to the pandemic, the family greatly regrets a traditional repast following the services cannot be held safely. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church (421 St. Patrick Street, Donaldsonville, LA 70346) or the Sisters of the Holy Family (6901 Chef Menteur Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70126).
