Obituary Notice Douglas Frederick Meier, 91, Rugby died at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby on September 8, 2020. Doug was born on December 31, 1928 to Edward and Clara (Ebel) Meier at Churchs Ferry, North Dakota. He graduated from high school there in 1947. He began his life long career with the Great Northern Railroad as a telegrapher at that time. Doug joined the United States Army in January of 1951 and served in Germany for a period of time. He was honorably discharged on his birthday in 1952. He had married Donna Oliver in Rugby on June 10, 1951. After military service he resumed his career with the railroad in Rugby til November 29, 1976 and then served in Towner, and Devils Lake until he retired on June 20, 1989 after 42 years with the Great Northern and Burlington Northern Railroads. On December 22, 1989 his wife, Donna died and he married Joyce Hoffart on June 22, 1996. Doug served as a scout master for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 551 in Rugby for several years, but his greatest contribution to his community was as past commander and a member of the color guard for 62 years of the Clarence Larson Post # 23 – American Legion. He was a life long member of Bethany Lutheran Church and later First Lutheran Church in Rugby. Doug enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, playing cards and spending time with his family. In addition he had been a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 3834 in Rugby for 40 years. Mr. Meier is survived by his wife, Joyce and his son, David, both of Rugby. He also leaves 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchilden and 4 step-grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren. In addition he leaves a sister, Janice Hirschey – Glenwood, Minnesota and a sister-in-law Alice Meier – Garrison, North Dakota. He also leaves step children Rick (Marlene) Hoffart – Hubbard, Oregon; Jolette (Mike) Dabney – East Windsor, New Jersey; Brad (Angela) Hoffart and Brian (Lisa) Hoffart – all of Portland, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna, brothers Leon and Kenneth Meier, and a sister-in-law Dody Meier and his parents. Memorial services will be held at First Lutheran Church in Rugby on Monday, September 14, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Sharon Baker will officiate while Bernard Arcand and Josh Mattson will provide music for the service. Tim Ostrem will serve as urn bearer and military honors will be provided by the Clarence Larson Post # 23 American Legioin and the North Dakota Military Honors Detail. Burial will follow at Persilla Watts Cemetery following the service. Even though Covid-19 restrictions have been somewhat relaxed, guests are urged to observe social distancing and to wear facial coverings if possible.
