Audrey L. Wentzell Obituary

PERU – Audrey L. (Byron) Wentzell of Ridge Road, Peru went to be with her Lord on September 4, 2020. She was born in Barnet, Vermont on September 5, 1927; the daughter of George and Alice (Cheney) Byron. She was educated at West Peru schools. She held several jobs however the one that she spoke of the most frequently was when she worked for Fannie Farmer Chocolates. She loved chocolates of all types. Audrey was also known for the beautiful cakes that she made. She always made sure that her family members had a special birthday cake each year. Audrey married Ray Wentzell on October 24, 1942. They resided in several places- finally settling down on their farm in Peru in 1950. Even though having a farm was a lot of work, Audrey really enjoyed it. She was known to have a few pigs right in her kitchen. Audrey was a devout Christian. Her faith was very important to her and carried her through some very difficult times. She was very active in the United Baptist Church of Peru where she taught Sunday School for more than 50 years and was recognized for her service in 2007. Audrey was affectionately known as “Ma” to everyone. She loved children and helped raise many. Holidays always meant lots of family and good food. Audrey was the happiest when she was around family. Survivors include a son Raymond Wentzell and his wife Sandra of Peru, his children, Jennifer, Michael and Amanda, her granddaughter and caregiver Angela Barkhouse and her husband Mike of Peru; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Audrey was predeceased by her husband Ray of 64 years in May of 2006; daughters Beverly and RaeJean; brother Howard, sisters hazel, Dorothy, Tillie and Stella. A special thank you to Brenda Calden, Sarah Merrill and Debbie Sykes for their care and compassion during the last months of Audrey’s life. A special thank you to long time friend Mandy Parsons for their Tuesday talks. Also thank you Beacon Hospice- Rae, Amber, Robin and April. At Audrey’s request there will be a private family graveside service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Audrey’s name to the United Baptist Church of Peru.
