Lawrence J. “L.J.” Morel Jr. 67, of Reese, died Saturday afternoon September 5, 2020 at New Hope Bay in Bay City. He was born June 14, 1953 in Bay City, son of the late Lawrence J. and Barbara (Matuszewski) Morel Sr. L.J. was a 1971 graduate of Reese High School, received his Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering from GMI in Flint and later went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. On February 12, 1977 he married his wife of forty-three years, the former Geralyn Russell, in St. Norbert’s Catholic Church in Munger. She survives him. Mr. Morel was employed for forty-three years as a Controls Engineer with Nexteer in Saginaw. He retired in 2014. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Reese and the Knights of Columbus. He had a passion for woodworking and enjoyed golf, hunting, and bowling. Surviving besides his wife Geralyn are his children, Brian Morel of Munger; his daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Kerry Messing of Reese; and three grandchildren, Luke, Jack and Abby Messing. Also surviving is his brother, Rick Morel and his wife Susan of Birch Run; and his sister-in-law, Debra Morel of Lebanon, Tennessee. In addition to his parents L.J. was predeceased by his brother, David Morel and his sister, Janice “Jana” Morel. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2020 from St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Reese. Father Christian Tabares will officiate with Committal Services to follow in the St. Elizabeth Cemetery. L.J.’s family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home. 9940 Saginaw Street in Reese on Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Liturgy. Due to Covid 19, masks and social distancing will be required at during the visitation periods and at the Funeral Liturgy. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Elizabeth Catholic Church or Habitat for Humanity. L.J.’s family would like to thank the staff at New Hope Bay for their love, concern and exceptional care of their husband, father, grandfather, and brother while he was a resident there for the past two years.
