Ida Grace Currie Obituary

Ida G. Currie

1922 – 2020

With many wonderful memories of our mother, we sadly announce the passing of Ida Grace (Wood) Currie in her 98th year.  Ida entered peacefully into rest to be reunited with her beloved husband Bob and daughter Janice (Currie) Vlaar.  She was the daughter of Bessie (Clark) Wood and Kendall Wood of Douglastown.

She is survived by her son, Bob (Ellen Marie) and her daughter, Sharon MacCullam (Collie); her grandchildren: Rob Currie, Karen Newman, Scott MacCullam, Lesley Yorke, Marcus Vlaar and Jillian Macosky, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ida was a home-maker but also worked outside the home from early years, and was well-known as a friendly face at a number of stores in Chatham.  She was a member of the IODE and the Silver Link Rebekah Lodge, and attended St. Andrew’s United Church.  She was a lifetime member of the United Church Woman.

Ida walked, curled and taught left-handed knitting, and touched many lives in the community for the better.  She loved the family cottage at Schooner Point and enjoyed being first mate of her husband Bob’s sailboat as they sailed around Miramichi Bay.  Like her mother, Ida was an enthusiastic traveler who went to Europe three times and took many air and bus trips through various parts of North America.  She had a prodigious memory and happily shared countless stories that emerged from her long life on the Miramichi.

The family is grateful to the staff at her last three homes – the Howe Residence, the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home and Bridgeview Hall.

There was a private family graveside service held at Moorefield Cemetery on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at 2 pm with The Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight officiating.  Music for the service was provided by grandson Rob Currie and the hymns were “Precious Lord” and “A Closer Walk with Thee”.  Recorded music “The Lord’s Prayer” sung by Ida’s husband Bob Currie was played.  The scripture readings were read by Meg Currie great granddaughter and Karen Newman granddaughter.  Remembrances of Ida were presented by Rob Currie.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the St. Andrew’s United Church Community Kitchen or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements were entrusted to Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, telephone (506) 773-3492 or messages of condolence may be sent online to www.adamsfh.ca
