Donald Wayne Calvert Bixby, Oklahoma Obituary

Donald Wayne Calvert

Coach Calvert went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday night, September 5, 2020, after a long battle with Parkinson’s. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing at his home in Bixby, Oklahoma.

Don was born on the family farm just outside of Mt. View, OK. on June 12, 1937, to Roy and Jewel Calvert. He was the youngest of three boys. Don graduated from Oklahoma State University, where he had already begun his coaching career as a graduate assistant. Don next coached high school boys’ and girls’ basketball at Beaver, OK., before he moved on to coach boys’ basketball in Bartlesville, OK. He then moved his family to Bridge City, TX., for two years before returning to Oklahoma at Putnam City West High School in Bethany. Other stops along the way included Caprock HS (Amarillo, Tx) and Mt. View-Gotebo High School. Moving to Kansas brought an opportunity to coach women’s basketball at Barton County Community College (Great Bend, KS), where he led them to their first final four appearances. He spent three years at Oral Roberts University again, coaching women’s basketball with his son Don Calvert II. Don was very active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, spending most summers taking his teams and family to summer camps in Colorado, Oklahoma, and North Carolina. Even in retirement, Don continued coaching through AAU. He touched the lives of hundreds of athletes with his selfless dedication and compassion for kids, always striving to make everyone he encountered a better athlete/player as well as a better individual.

Don began his walk with Christ at the age of 17 and was ordained as a deacon in the church at the age of 28, where he continued to serve as a teacher and a leader throughout his life. Don’s tough love and unconditional forgiveness have left an impression on everyone he met.

Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Sue (Pewthers) Calvert, one brother and sister-in-law George and Glenna Calvert (Lubbock, TX), five children: Donna and Greg Stone (Perry, OK), Don and Karen Calvert (Beggs, OK), Cai and Chris Lowry (San Antonio, TX), Deana and Brett Webber (OKC), and Julie and Jae Barton (OKC). Me (top center) with "young Donnie" as our Col-Hi Wildcats celebrated the state championship. Coach Calvert was our Assistant Coach under Sid Burton. Coach Calvert will be remembered as a kind and patient man.
