Herbert M. Conway

HERBERT M. CONWAY VINALHAVEN………………….Herbert Myers Conway, 93, died on September 1, 2020 at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead on Vinalhaven. Born on Vinalhaven on November 17, 1926, he was the son of Max Stanley and Eleanor (Henniger) Conway. During WWII, Herb quit school at age17, as did some of his classmates, and joined the U.S. Navy. He served on the liberty ship, Hesperia AKS 13, going to the Pacific and was in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrender was signed. Thanks to Frank Adams, their teacher, the boys from Vinalhaven, received their diplomas when they returned home. Herb was the last Vinalhaven native WWII veteran and was very proud to have served his country. Herb married Marjorie Smith on January 29, 1947. They shared their anniversary with Herb's grandparents, Evie and Angus Henniger, and ten years later Herb's brother, Clarence, married Muriel Oakes on January 29 (1957). They celebrated their anniversaries together through 2018 when Marge passed away. They were married 71 years. Herb’s employment included the fishing industry where he worked hand lining and lobstering. He also transported herring on a sardine carrier for Paul Williams, owner of Fish All Bait Company from California. For many years, Herb worked as an able bodied seaman and ticket agent for the Maine State Ferry Service until his retirement. During his retirement years he was a caretaker for the Rhinelander family. Active in his community, Herb was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Gold Club, the American Legion, and had previously served on the Vinalhaven Volunteer Fire Department. Herb loved golf and went to the G & T Golf Tournament at North Haven for many years. In addition, he played at Myrtle Beach with his golf friends and different golf courses in Maine. He also liked to play pool, cribbage, and hang out "John’s fish house". Herb especially loved time spent with his family. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie Smith Conway, four brothers, Stanley, Van, and Harry, son-in-law, Timothy B. Dyer, and sister-in-law, Muriel Conway. Surviving is his brother, Clarence Conway; three children, Cynthia Dyer; Pamela Alley and her husband, Steve; Edward Alley and his Martha; five grandchildren, five grandchildren, Tina, Leslie, Raymond, Shannon, and Natalie, fourteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The Conway family would like to thank the staff at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead and the Island’s Medical Center for the loving care they gave Herb. There will be a graveside service for Herbert M. Conway and Marjorie Conway at 12 noon, Sunday, July 25, 2021 at Cummings Cemetery in Vinalhaven. Elder Robert Candage will officiate.
