Alberta E. Davis was born in Castlewood, SD, on July 21, 1927, to John and Elizabeth (Staudy) Davis. She attended school in Castlewood, SD.  Following school, she married Edward “Jack” Engels on April 1, 1945, in Madison, MN. Afterwards, the couple moved to their farm by Goose Lake where they lived, farmed, and fed cattle together for 65 years. Alberta spent the majority of her life being a farmer’s wife and raising their family. In 2015, she moved into the Castlewood Assisted Living. She enjoyed cooking, canning, dancing, playing the organ, writing in her daily journal and playing cards.

Alberta was a kind, joyous person who was quick to say, “thank you”, never had a bad word to say about anyone and never complained despite all of her ailments.

She got her final wish to go meet Jack in the garden. She was ready to go to Heaven.

Alberta is survived by her children: Sharon (Curt) Miller, Larry (Amber) Engels, Sandra (Gary) Jurgens, John (Dixie) Engels, Jerry Engels (Pam Dolney) and David (Patty) Engels all of Watertown, SD, and Scott (Carol) Engels of Castlewood, SD; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great- great- grandchildren; brother, Jim Davis (Barb Cozad), Castlewood, SD; sisters-in-law: Bev Davis, Castlewood, SD, and Viola Engels, Watertown, SD.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; grandson, Lance; her brothers: John Davis, Louis “Buzz” Davis, and Ed Davis; and sister, Mary Jongeling.

Alberta’s family would like to extend their heartfelt “thanks” to the staff and residents at the Castlewood Assisted Living, Lake Norden Avantara Care Center and the Prairie Lakes Hospice staff.
