Lynn William Carlson

Lynn William Carlson, the son of Axel and Clara (Erickson) Carlson was born on February 12, 1921 in Rugby, North Dakota. He died at the age of 99 years on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at the Heart of America Care Center in Rugby, North Dakota. Lynn grew up west of Wolford, North Dakota on the family farm and was the youngest of six children. He received his education in a one room schoolhouse 1 ¾ miles from his farm. He was united in marriage to Emma Schroeder on June 19, 1956. They made their home on the family farm, raising small grains, Hereford cattle along with hogs, chickens, and raising a large garden. They sold their farm and moved to Rugby in 1990. Emma died in 1996. Lynn was blessed to have a 2nd wife, Elizabeth (Voeller) Brossart and they were married on November 7, 1998 at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby, where they made their home. Growing up Lynn’s family got their first radio in 1926. When he was 9 years old, he was raking hay with a team of horses and by the age of 10, he was harrowing with a 4-horse hitch. Lynn started flying lessons at age 18 for $2.00 per lesson, joined a flying club and received his pilot’s license in 1940 at age 28. Lynn also got struck by lightning while leading a horse. He was very proud of his John Deere tractor collection and donated 3 of them to the Prairie Village Museum in Rugby. Lynn enjoyed being with family, friends and social events. He and Elizabeth loved to go dancing. He was a member of the Ox Creek Lutheran Church, Bethany Lutheran Church until they closed and a member of the Elks in Devils Lake. Lynn and Elizabeth lived their past few years at the Heart of America Care Center in Rugby. He was a great role model for all that knew him and he will be greatly missed. Elizabeth died on September 10, 2019. Lynn is survived by six step-children, Lynda (Scott) Humble of Cavalier, Randy (Cindy) Brossart, Rugby, Ronnie (Rita) Brossart of Leeds, Debbie (Allan) Hoffart of Rugby, Brenda Brossart of Grand Forks and Brian Brossart of Winona, MN; grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces, Doris Marsh and Donna (Bob) Beemer, all of Portland, OR; great nieces, Suzanne (Alan) Wolford of Elko, MN, Roxanne (Frank) Van Steenvoort of York, Judy (Thomas) Freund of Cando, Kris (David) Kozak of Durango, CO and Laura Scott of Longmont, CO; a great nephew, Michael (Julie) Schinzer of Merritt Island, FL;; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; many great and great-great nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma and second wife, Elizabeth; sisters, Corrine Burke and Otillia Burke; a brother, Casper; an infant sister, Julia and a 7 year old sister, Hetvig; a nephew, Albie Burke and a niece, Shirley Solberg. The family of Lynn Carlson would like to express our gratitude for you many acts of kindness and for your attendance at the visitation and the funeral service. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 10th at First Lutheran Church in Rugby with burial in the Persilla Watts Cemetery. Pastor Sharon Baker, officiating. Visitation will from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday with a prayer service and sharing of memories beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby. Visitation will continue on Thursday for one hour prior to the services at the church.
