Betty Jean Wilberger Obituary

Betty Jean (Nelson) Wilberger was born July 2, 1929 in Kearney, Ne, the daughter of Arnold and Anna (Anderson) Nelson. She passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, August 27, 2020 in Syracuse, Ne at the age of 91. Betty and her family moved to Axtell, Ne soon after her birth because her father was seriously ill as they had extended family in the area. She graduated from Axtell High School in 1946. She stayed in Axtell to help her parents operate their café. She worked for the Farmers Bank before moving to Kearney, and then to Omaha. She went to business school and worked in the comptroller office at Clarkson Hospital. On September 14th 1952, she was united in marriage to Dwight R. Wilberger at Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell, Ne. Nebraska City became their home where Dwight was in business with Dean Hauptman known as D &D Electric and Refrigeration. Looking for work, Betty applied at St Mary’s Hospital in the business office, but was hired by Sister Clara as a lab tech. In later years this knowledge assisted her family with any health issues that arose. Dwight and Betty raised their family of three children, Michael Dean, Nancy Lynn, and Richard Alan. During the many years of being in business, Betty, and Dean’s wife Wanda, were active in the office activities and answering the telephone. Betty was a member of First Lutheran Church in Nebraska City where she was involved in teaching Sunday school, 3456 club, and later in life was involved as chairman of the church kitchen activities. Betty also was active in serving Meals on Wheels. She was involved as a leader for Cub Scouts and Brownies when Michael and Nancy were younger. In later years she served on the Wildwood Period House board and served as chairman for several years. She was also interested in genealogy. Family history became a project which filled some sleepless nights after she was diagnosed as a celiac. One of her hobbies was sewing which she learned before marriage from a friend. Since she was left-handed, Betty found it difficult to find someone to teach her. Her mother and sister were great seamstresses and after Betty learned how to sew, her mother bought her a sewing machine. She made clothes for herself, her children, and grandchildren. Betty also enjoyed cooking and baking cinnamon rolls, which was a favorite that she shared with family and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Dwight on March 30, 2006, her parents, twin brother and sister Harold Dean and Helen Jane, sister Marcella Weis, grandson Benjamin Peter, and son in law Bradford Peter. She is survived by her children, Michael Wilberger and wife Janet of Bellevue, Nancy and friend Joe McLaughlin of Scottsdale, Az, Richard and wife Renee of Lincoln, grandchildren Jordan Sauer and husband Jon of Lincoln, Trey Wilberger and wife Morgan of Omaha, Blake Wilberger of Lincoln, Corey Peter and fiancé Merry Yannace of Phoenix, Az., and one great-grandson Chester Sauer and great-granddaughter Marlow Sauer.
