Emily Bauer Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Emily Anne Bauer.

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2020 Emily passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 98 years, at the Roblin Personal Care Home where she resided for close to three years. Until the age of 96 she had resided in her own home.

Emily was born on September 28, 1921 to parents William and Lydia Halwas (nee Wilderman) in the Lockerby District and grew up in a family of 10. Emily was baptized and confirmed at the Free Field Bethany Lutheran Church and received her education in the Lockerby school district near Inglis, Manitoba. Emily grew up in a farming family and would share many childhood memories with her family. She would reminisce of how she and a neighbor girl would sneak into Inglis for banana splits.

When she was about nine years of age she broke through the ice on a slough near the school yard. An older boy noticed and pulled her to safety. It was too far for her to walk home soaking wet so the teacher put her by the woodstove to dry out most of the day. Coming from a very devoted Christian family, the children were expected to read many verses of the bible, out loud, every night. Her father pretty much knew the Bible by heart so they didn’t dare skip a verse or they would all have to start all over again. After Emily had finishes her education she stayed on the family farm to help her parents.

At the age 20 she met John Bauer of the Grainfield area, near the town of Roblin. They married on October 28, 1943. After their marriage they moved to the “flats” in the Grainfield area, where John continued to farm with his father. After farming for a few a years, John’s parents moved to BC and became involved in the logging industry, convincing John and Emily to move with them. After spending a few years in BC John decided he was tired of the constant rain and being wet all the time, so back to the prairies they came, now being a family of four. John and Emily then purchased their homestead seven miles south east of Roblin in the Grainfield area and that’s where they stayed, adding three more children to their family.

Emily loved her life as a farm wife. She grew huge gardens, milked cows (she loved her Jersey cows) and lovingly tended to her flower beds. She was continuously cooking and baking, not only for her family, but also for many hired men who also sat around her table. Upon John’s passing in 1990, Emily then bought her house in town on 85 Newton Bay and lived there until the age of 96 years. Besides all her other duties, Emily was a meticulous housekeeper, many a person’s commented how her house shone like glass.

Emily is survived by daughter, Carol Funk, her; son, Brian Bauer; daughter, Elaine Baumung (Harley); daughters-in-law, Dianne Bauer and Karen Bauer. Emily is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Winnie and Cynthis Halwas.

Emily was predeceased by son, Glen (1989), husband, John (1990), grandson, Dean Bauer (2017), son-in-law, Hank Funk (2018), daughter-in-law, Beryl (2019) and son, Clarence (Butch) (2019). Emily was also predeceased by her parents and was the last of her siblings of ten.

Emily was very unique woman. She never ever wore a pair of pants. Emily always wore a dress winter and summer, even when she was working in her gardens or milking cows. She always believed a true lady always wore a dress!
