Gertrude Gertie Mercer Obituary

Passed peacefully away at the Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre, Twillingate, NL, on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, the late Gertrude "Gertie" Mercer, age 92 years, of Boyd's Cove, NL.

Gertrude Irene Mercer was born December 15, 1927 to John and Elizabeth (Muggee) LeDrew. She grew up in Boyd's Cove with her seven siblings, and married her husband George Mercer at the age of 16. Gertie, as most people knew her, always kept herself busy. She raised her daughter Mildred while keeping a garden and animals and running her businesses like her restaurant, her games room, and selling Avon. She was the community postmistress for 11 years and was a leader for Girl Guides and the 4H Club. She was especially proud of her involvement with the Anglican Church Women, achieving 77 years of service before she passed. As she grew older and her family grew larger, with Mildred marrying Dave and having four girls; Susan, Nancy, Lori, and Hollie, "Nan Mercer" was the rock of her family. She was always there to give honest advice, a slice of rhubarb pie, and a reminder to always put your faith in God. Gertie was an incredibly strong woman with a strong faith and will be greatly missed by many. Her family wishes to thank the staff at the Notre Dame Bay Community Health Centre and home support workers Jackie, Joan, Gertie, Maxine, and Mona for all their care and support. Thank you to her substitute brother, Wilson Mills, and to Walter Newman for helping her stay in her beloved home next to the church for so many years. A very special thank you to the ACW, Reverand Giles, and other members of the church for helping her get to church services and being such good friends to her.
