Mary Winton Obituary

MARY “MAZI” WINTON Raymond, NH Mary Winton, 66, was surrounded by her loving family at her home in Raymond when she peacefully passed away on August 24, 2020 after a lengthy illness. She was born on October 26, 1953, in Boston, MA, the daughter of the late Edward W. and Eleanor G. (Kennedy) Preble. She spent her childhood and portions of her adult life living in East Boston, and she raised her children in nearby Arlington, MA. In her retirement, Mary was a resident of Raymond living in the Sherwood Glen Community for the last 6 years where she was a frequent player at Friday night community card games. Mary was the first female ramp service worker for the Trans World Airlines (TWA) at Boston Logan Airport, and then later worked at American Airlines, totaling 35+ years of airline industry service. While working for TWA, she met her kind and compassionate husband, Billie F. Winton. Through her career she became an avid traveler, relishing weekends away, girls’ trips to the tropics with her closest friends, camping at Sebago Lake with family in her special tent, and spontaneous flights to France and Hawaii with her two daughters, Vicki-Rose and Samantha. Mary was a family-oriented woman of faith, and her two daughters were her pride and joy. As a mom, Mary never missed a soccer game or piano recital. From lemonade stands, and sledding with hot chocolate, to college move-in days and weddings, Mary was a caring and committed mother. She was an active member of the PTO, always a willing parent-volunteer, and involved in all of her girls’ activities, even making her home the longtime delivery hub for Arlington’s Girls Scout cookies. She raised her daughters in the Catholic Church encouraging their engagement in youth ministry, and emphasizing a fundamental attention to manners, consideration of others, and “the golden rule.” She cherished her daughters, and loved seeing them grow into accomplished women with loving husbands, whom she also loved. Mary was enthusiastic about holidays; she loved both gathering with family and over-the-top decorating. She treasured time spent sitting around the table with her brothers and sister cracking jokes ("Get on the bus boys"), and you could always count on Mary to install Santa and a Rudolph up on the roof. She loved shopping and sales, and was always ready to give away her bargain-finds if you were in need of an item she had. Mary was extremely social and could make a friend anywhere. She met some of her best and longest friends at a nail salon where she struck up conversations (and she loved having her nails painted – especially black). She was known to host Tupperware parties, and was a longtime member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed many simple pleasures with friends, including playing cards, scrabble, golf, floating in pools, feeding birds, relaxing on her porch in the sunshine, and knitting hundreds of baby hats for hospitals’ newborns. She was crafty and resourceful, able to sew and fix anything, even redesigning her daughter’s wedding dress to make it just right. Mary was known to drink her coffee with more cream than coffee, to enjoy fried seafood by the ocean, and enjoy Betty Ann’s donuts after church. Her particular tastes and unique ways will be the very things family and friends will miss most about Mary, for she was a very special sister, friend, wife and mother, and her absence here on earth will be felt deeply. She was predeceased by her brother James Preble, and is survived by her husband of 29 years, Billie F. Winton of Raymond, NH; two daughters, Vicki-Rose Porter and her husband Jeffrey of Durham, ME and Samantha Zegarelli and her husband Michael of Watertown, MA; four siblings, Evelyn Cort and her husband Nicholas of Bow, NH, Eddie Preble and his wife Eileene of Melrose, MA, Robert Preble of Weymouth, MA, and Paul Preble and his wife June of Winthrop, MA; and several nieces and nephews. In light of the pandemic, services for Mary will be held privately. Condolences and flowers may be sent to Brewitt Funeral Service, 2 Epping St., Raymond, NH.
