Bar Harbor Catherine “Kay” D. Smith, 94, died peacefully of natural causes on Thursday August 13, 2020 at Mt. Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor. She was born December 1, 1925 in New York City the daughter of Patrick J. and Marion (Kilgannon) Waters. Kay is survived by her son Harry Smith, Jr. of Rochester, MA and sister Sally Doyle of Sagamore, MA.: 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her children, Thomas M. Smith, Catherine D. Hodgkins and Patrick J. Smith; siblings Helen and Martin Waters. A Celebration of life will be held at 1pm, September 12, 2020 at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Kebo Street, Bar Harbor. She was born Dec. 1, 1925 in New York City, daughter of Patrick Joseph Waters of Sligo, Ireland, and Marion Helen Kilgannon of New York, NY. Catherine achieved her GED and pursued a career as Dietary Aide at St. Luke's Hospital in Middleboro, MA. Catherine was an advocate for women's empowerment and rights. She enjoyed baking and creating her famous apple pies. Catherine married Harry Smith Sr. and became a successful homemaker in Roxbury, MA. They later settled in Middleboro with their 4 children, where she was known as the neighborhood mother. Catherine moved to Maine and worked as a chambermaid at the Golden Anchor in BH until she retired, and was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Catherine is survived by younger sister Sally Doyle; son Harry Smith Jr. and his wife Karen of Rochester, MA; Daughter in-law Diane Smith of Middleboro; Karen Smith of Bangor; son in-law Lawrence Hodgkins of Bar Harbor; 11 Grandchildren Stephanie Hodgkins, Dallas Hodgkins, and Byron Hodgkins of Bar Harbor, and Kala Ward of Northeast Harbor; Tamara Türeli of Istanbul; Patrick Smith, Jr. of Hudson; Jeremiah Smith of Lincoln; Jason Smith, Samantha Smith, and Harry Smith III of Rochester; Kara Smith of Los Angeles; 11 Great grandchildren, Eden Hodgkins of Southwest Harbor; Grace Ward of Northeast Harbor; Bella Smith and Sophia Smith of Lincoln; Lara Tureli of Istanbul; Aiden Smith and Olivia Smith of Bangor; Kaelyn Smith, Keira Smith, and Wyatt Smith of Rochester; and Emmerson Smith of Los Angeles. Catherine was predeceased by her younger siblings Martin Waters and Helen Waters; amazing loving husband Harry Smith Sr. of Ellsworth; Brother in-law Paul Doyle of Framingham; Sons, Thomas Smith of Middleboro; Patrick Smith, Sr. of Ellsworth; and daughter Catherine Hodgkins of Bar Harbor. The family is grateful for the compassionate assistance by Catherine's caregivers, Marsha Bennoch, Margaret Bishop, James N. Riley Jr., Laura Parlee, Abram Guay, and Amanda Hansen. Services will be held Sept. 12 at 1 PM at Holy Redeemer Cemetery adjacent the Kebo Golf Course. Reception will be held afterwards in Lawrence Hodgkins' residence at 1012 State Hwy 3, Bar Harbor.
