Colleen Marie Nehman Obituary

Colleen Marie Nehman, age 49, passed away peacefully August 19, 2020, succumbing to a three (3) year battle with Stage IV Lung Cancer. Colleen was born October 28, 1970 in Washington, D.C., to Michael and Sharon Fowler. She married her high school sweetheart, Greg Nehman, in November, 1995. Colleen loved many things, nothing more than being in the presence of her loving family. Holidays were one of Colleen’s most treasured parts of life. She loved hosting dozens of family members at both Easter and Christmas. Her favorites. Ever the gracious and always prepared host, Colleen enjoyed coming up with different games each year for each respective holiday. The Easter Sunday sack race was always the spotlight event, eagerly awaited for by the many nieces, nephews and young cousins that made up the competition. Of course, the Easter Egg Hunt was another of the events all guests looked forward to. Colleen also loved her chosen profession. A graduate, both undergrad and grad school, of Bowie State University in 1993 and 1998 respectfully, Colleen began her career as an Anne Arundel County, Maryland 6th grade Middle School Language Arts teacher. Although she loved this assignment, as well as its specific age group, she decided to take the national exam required to be a certified reading teacher. Her choice was driven solely by her desire to work part time, a luxury restricted almost completely to Reading Teachers. The decision to work part time was so that she could spend the maximum time with the loves of her life, her children Emma (currently 19) and Nick (currently 17). As Colleen’s life and career continued moving forward, her greatest joy, being a mom to Emma and Nick took center stage. The words dedicated, treasured, devoted, etc., could never do Colleen’s passion justice. Nor could they begin to describe the love she gave to her children. In fact, there are no words strong enough to describe the mom she was; the standard she set for all mothers; and the manner in which she raised her children. She taught Emma and Nick so many wonderful and positive character traits, with her two (2) strong suits being: a work ethic second to none; and constant discipline – the two (2) traits that fueled her success in all areas of life. She never stopped teaching her children how to be successful, how to conduct themselves in all areas of life, but especially in school, and when in the presence of adults. Colleen’s children reciprocated her love by adopting all the lessons and examples Colleen provided them. She was beyond proud of them, and her love for them was infinite. Colleen Nehman is the cherished wife of Greg Nehman, adored mother of Emma and Nicholas Nehman, dear sister to Michelle Morgan, abundantly loved daughter and daughter in law of, respectively, Michael and Sharon Fowler, and Jimmie and Christine Nehman. Colleen is also survived by the many nieces and nephews she loved as if they were her own. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Colleen's name be made to Lungevity Foundation (https://lungevity.org). NOTE: Regrettably, due to the COVID-19 virus, Maryland state law severely limits the number of people who can be in one (1) room for church services; public viewings; and the funeral itself. As such, it’s with deepest regret the family must treat the funeral and Mass, for lack of a better term, as ‘invite-only’ events. After the number of family members are counted, there are only a precious few remaining number of people who can attend these events. The family’s closest friends are the only ones who will receive an ‘invite.’ Moreover, the family has decided, as a result of the COVID-19 laws, viewings will not be conducted. To reiterate, the family is extremely saddened that so many of Colleen’s friends won’t be able to pay their proper respects at one of the traditional events that make up what a funeral is normally composed of.
